Default Power Steering Rack Help PLease

alright, my rack is def leaking and i was about to buy a lower mileage one of off a member here. after doing some reading i found several threads that say that there are diff racks for the ls1 cars and you can figure it out through the rpo codes.

i went to the dealer today and got the rpo codes for my car since the ones on the door are gone. the parts guy didnt know which rpo code was for the steering rack and told me there wasnt one. he gave me the part number and thats it.

i have the list of codes for my car if anyone could help me out to figure out which rack i have. i need to get this fixed asap. i also have the part number of the rack on my car, from there im lost... thanks for any help.

The RPO is either FE1 or FE2, I can't remember which. From what I can recall, however, they break it down at the dealer by "soft," "firm (V6)," and "sport." The only thing that was certain was the "firm (v6)" was 2.5 turn lock to lock, and was the most expensive. I can only assume that was the Y87 rack, but that is the one I went with and it is 2.5 turns lock to lock.

Based on my experience, do not even try to order a rack through GM parts direct or any of the local parts stores. They do not have them separated properly, and you will probably end up with an LT1 rack which will not fit your car (I went through 3 of them that way!). Stick with the stealer on this part. Anyway, good luck, I feel your pain.

ok, mine says FE2. can i interchange mine between the others? will the other rack just bolt up? will i need anything else to make it work? will there be any changes with the effectiveness of the rack if its different?

the car im possibly getting the used rack from is a 1999 z28, same as mine. so they could possibly be the same rack i hope.

AFAIK the 1998-2002 steering racks all interchange.
