I looks like something was there before. AAP was the only shop that ever worked on it besides me. Should there be a brace here? It's a '01 'Vert.

Looks like the tunnel brace goes there. Maybe verts don't have one, but left in the mounting brackes to save money or something.

Yup, that's where the tunnel brace goes. Many people end up removing it for exhaust clearance or to put a driveshaft loop in its place.

I'd have to agree that a tunnel brace goes there, I guess G.M. might not use a tunnel brace on the vert but I would think they would. Hopefully someone with a vert will chime in.

Is that an aftermarket y-pipe? That might be the reason it is missing.

Yes, it's a Bassani y-pipe. Not having the cross member in hand, I cannot tell if it would interfere. I am upset that it may have been taken off without my knowledge, another piece should have been fabbed or spacers should have been used, it also attaches to the torque arm. Can this be replaced with an aftermarket piece?

I've never seen a stock tunnel brace attach to the torque arm. BMR makes a tunnel brace, as you said if need be you could use spacers ( flat washers ) to get the clearence you need.

The tunnel brace really serves little if any purpose. You'll be just fine without it. If you want something there just get a Lakewood driveshaft loop or something.

I second that.Your best bet is to get a Lakewood drive shaft loop it would serve as both if you were really worrind about it.
Here's a pic of mine.

Thanks for the info. I need a driveshaft loop to race at the local tracks anyway, should I go under 13 sec. Does anyone make a torque arm with a built in drive shaft loop?

Well the factory stamped POS doesn't do anything.

If they put on your exhaust they probably took it of when it started to hit instead of doing it correctly

I have a tunnel brace that tightens up that area and can accept a drive shaft loop.

Of course you know I have the bolt-on SFC's for the convertibles.
With the power your running it won't be long before you start tweaking your car's body

I suppose an exhaust system is out of the question with the Lakewood unit.

Actually the lakewood driveshaft loop is the one you want if your putting aftermarket exhaust on.The piece that runs acroos the tunnel goes over the y-pipe(exhaust),where alot of other loops run under the y-pipe and have problems of aftermarket y-pipes banging on the loop.
Some guys can still run the Lakewood with True duels, just depends on your setup.

How is it possible that stuff leaves your car without you knowing it?
Let me guess.
You let other people work on your car that you "trust."

Do you still trust them?
If there was a problem you should have been told immediately and given options for it's resolution instead of finding out later.
This kind of crap happens all the time.

Somethings GM does are questionable but a tunnel brace is suppose to be there.
Chances are good you will never be catapulted by a broken drive shaft but if you were would you want to be driving a convertible?

I agree Don, my focus has been on increasing power and driveability, I will address the suspension next. As far as my hired shop is concerned, my mechanic, Mark at AAP was recently killed in an auto accident, shortly after the power mods were done, so I don't have recourse there. Some work was done well, and some things were not, so I need to fix some things. Once I get this car running right, I will attend to tightening up the suspension, and replacing the brace with something good.

def get a driveshaft loop if you dont have the brace on. heres a pic of when my shaft broke it would have helped if the shaft broke at the trans. and it helped keep the exhaust in place and the exhaust kinda stopped the driveshaft from getting too wild (although it still left a mess). without it, the driveshaft woulda flopped around a lot worse cause the exhaust woulda been pushed out of the way.

Get the lakewood. I had it with my FLPs, cleared by a mile. When my driveshaft broke (before the DSL), it busted up the floorpan, broke the tailshaft, bent the torque arm almost 90*, and crushed the exhaust. Repairs totalled around $1000 with me doing all the work.

GET A DSL!!

My convert. had the crossmember there. I had to ditch it since the aftermarket Y-pipe too. Using spacers to kit it would make it too low and effect ground clearance. I am looking for a d-shaft loop to fit above. Good luck.

Roland, I'd love to help you out with that. Any thought of getting those SFC's we talked about earlier in the year I'll throw in a tunnel brace to solve the potential catapulting issue.
