Get a buddy to turn the car over and see it there is spark. If there is, more than likely it is not ignition related. I have seen the temp sensor go bad for no reason and I have seen the connector come out for no reason. And btw, the crank sensor has no real function. All it does is monitor misfires. You could unplug it and the car will run fine.

And on a side note, I have melted a rotor in one of those optisparks. It was almost brand new.

youre wrong, the crank sensor determines alot, and a vehicle wont start without it, many cars come to my job, (mainly 4.3 v6) that rub the sensor or the sensors bad, you must have meant cam sensor, where the car will rund but not too good and set a code
..to the poster is beileve you have a security isssue if it ran and sputtered and died then its probably that, and if the batteries fully charged but it still crank whack the starter and if still no then pretty sure its vats, just bypass and move on, id do it for you but im on the southern tip of fort worth
<<<---gm tech,
..also if i remeber you got me some parts for my beater a couple of years ago from houston, thanks

I beg to differ. The crank sensor deteremines **** except misfires on any 96-97 LT1 car. As far as the 4.3 and other motors, I can't give you an honest answer, but I kbo from experience that the LT1 doesnt care. It is not essential to the operation of the vehicle.

If it is a security issue, won't the car not turn over at all? I thought that a security issue dissabled the starter signal.....my car turns over but not enough to start....except for the first time where it ran like crap for 20 seconds.....

And yes, I got those parts for you. I'm making another trip down there this weekend to get a new toy-- a convertible. Glad I could help, and thanks for trying to return the favor here!

He is right, crank sensor is only for misfire detection.

The CPS on the 96/97 LT1 has no effect on ignition. My gut feel is that it was there as a computer test for the LS1.

Sounds like fuel or fuel delivery. How long has the car sat? bad fuel? low fuel pressure?

Not ruling out the opti, but on 96/97s vented optis became more reliable.

Since you said you replaced the harness recently, I'd say it might be that the PCM is not grounded properly. I am going through the same thing...

IDK if you already checked this but the fuel pump could be bad. my wife's 98 fuel pump would make noise but it wasn't putting out enough fuel pressure to keep the car running for very long.
