So I lived in Houston from 1961 to 2004, (yeah, I'm old). Moved to Oklahoma City in 2004 for work. Did not realize just how bad the traffic was in Houston till I got away from it. It really is a competitive contact sport!

The access to awesome restaurants is one of the best things about the city. Moved back to Texas in 2006, now I live just west of Dallas. Absolutely love it, lots of good restaurants (I must be getting hungry) and lots of hospitals and medical centers as well. Baylor and lots other university based facilities. Also we have seen less housing and other economic problems than many places in Texas and the US.

Hope you get all the info you need!

How is the cost of living down there? What are some pros and cons that you have if you live in that area?

Her Job would carry us till I found something there. I'm an ASE certified auto Tech, and currently work for Summit (racing) in Ohio. Is the job market dried up dow there for someone like me that just has an assoc degree in nothing from a decent school?

Any cons about the weather?

What are some good areas to look at for a place to live?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Nothing is for sure yet we are just looking at our options.
Thanks
Josh

You will love Texas. It is the best state in the entire world (country). There are not very many cons to it, but I would say the biggest one is humidity. I personally like Fort Worth the most out of Texas, but I'm biased cause of TCU. Its a very big and very nice state and I think anyone who moves here would love it.

My wife is from Toronto and we spent a lot of time up there during the last four years. Miss the people but not the cold.

Come on down and thaw. The trees are starting to bud out this week.

Because I'm such a good friend, I will go to Texas in a week and a half just to check it out for you.

I really like the Dallas area.

I moved here [Dallas-Forth Worth area, Arlington specifically] recently from NJ, and honestly, the traffic ain't half as bad as on the East Coast [specially Northern NJ and NY]

I've visited Houston and San Antonio a few times and well.. Houston is HUMID.. 100 Degs with 100% humidity [or so it feels] begins to take it's toll on ya!

However, like someone else mentioned, you'll barely [no pun intended ] be outdoors for the most part [unless your job is such] so no big deal.

I'm 50/50 right now.. There are things I really like here around Dallas, like wide open roads, weather [it's not nearly as humid on this side], people in general, FOOD [holy crap, love the restuarants!!] and the fact that you could be walking in a TShirt and shorts in December! .. Life is much more laid back, not as aggressive as we're normally used to.. Oh and Shiner Rock!!

I don't really think there are any cons per se, however people around here CANNOT drive [ no offense to anyone ] ... I can't get over the fact that people will NOT yield when merging onto the highway and drive at 45 in the Left most lane!!! And, a good percentage of people are a bit technologically challenged..

All in all, I believe Texas is a good place to settle, especially considering how much growth potential this state has in the future... Also, I really like the fact that, in general, people in this state are much more friendlier and helpful than in any of the Eastern states I've lived in.. and I've lived in pretty much all of'em except Florida.. Real estate is another incentive to move here!!

Job opportunities are plenty, especially considering the present state of affairs!

I recommend you make a short trip here and visit Houston, Dallas, etc before making a decision.

Goodluck!

I'm also thinking about relocating... would prefer not to have the humidity though... maybe east central texas? ... where would I look? Online job sites, housing...etc?

Hows the weather in Katy,Pearland,Woodlands areas?

Omaha is hard to beat as far as cost of living, size(375-450k people, but it's very spread out),good schools and traffic, but like the rest of the midwest/north the weather is teh suxorz!!! Maybe a good 5 months of dry(not a gaurentee) weather.
It's hard to find info about schools, where to live, job market etc when your not even from the state, and we have a little one who would be going in a few years to school so that would be a deciding factor.
