I would stick with a jetta tdi. Not uncommon to squeeze 40+mpg from that little car.

We had a Jetta for a rental, decent car. Some what of on the small side, handled well though. I would get the Camry, less cramped.

I agree with unknownwarrior. You gotta go domestic.

Of the 2, I vote Camry.

Keep in mind though, I have little experience with either, lol. But if it was my choice, for my girl, I'd go with a Toyota over a VW.

I just test drove all sorts of these cars. Keep in mind that if you are marrying this woman, you will likely get stuck driving that car occasionally too! Go test drive the new Malibu before making any decisions, it was very nice for the price and got 33 mpg. American cars are just as well-built as import stuff nowadays. I actually liked the Malibu better than the new Accord and new Mazda 6.

X2.

My wife was looking for a new car to replace her 01 Solara that had all kinds of crap going wrong with it. We settled on an 09 Malibu LTZ with the Ecotec and 6 speed trans. Im 6'6" and I fit VERY well in the driver seat and if anybody sits behind me they have enough room to be comfortable as well. We basically test drove every family sedan on the market aside from the new Jetta TDI (it wasnt in stock for almost 100 miles) and felt the Malibu was the best built out of all of them.

Camry. Also look at he Honda Accord. Both would be cheaper to maintain than the VW if you kept it beyond the warranty period.

My DD is a 2007 V6 Honda Accord.

I'd say "buy American", but if she's dead set against it, there's not much you can do. My wife drives a Lexas. She used to buy American, but every single one of them fell to pieces within 80K miles, the last of which was her '98 Cavalier convertible.

But it's a myth that foreign cars don't have their troubles. Her 2003 Eclipse blew the clutch slave cylinder within the first 13K miles. But that's why cars come with warranties. On the flip side, though, her '08 Lexus IS-350 has over 10K mile on it now, and it hasn't even so much as made a funny noise yet. My '08 Z06, OTH, has all kinds of funny noises at just over 6K miles.

What's your price range?
Get her a Pontiac G8 GT. Tell her they are "made in Australia".

I would get a civic. 40mpg- very good reliability and their cheap if you get the right one. I was looking into one that was only 16k, (no options).

i'd also like to add that if you are the type that likes to work on your own cars.... looking down the road, the american car will have cheaper replacement parts. If you get a GM, you will be able to share a lot of the same consumables. For example, the 3.4L V6 uses the same spark plugs as LS1.

thanks for all the input i was trying to talk her into a malibu or impala, realisticly she prob wont drive that much, the car she has now is a lexus is250. i wouldnt trust her with a g8 gt lol we test drove the vw jetta tdi and it was a nice car, great mileage per tank. i have driven a 07 camry in the past. main thing is safety and the camry is the same car as the lexus es350 without all the extras. i thought about nissans but all my friends have had bad experiences with them such as the trans going out at around 80k miles. price doesnt really matter to much just looking for a good price on a reasonable car. i took her to a pontiac/gm dealer and the only car she wanted was the vette lol

To hell with VW. Toyota by a landslide between those 2.

Tell her by not buying American she is contributing to the downfall of our economy and buy a damn Malibu, lol.
