Question AC going bad

So I was getting my oil changed and I asked the guys to check my AC cause it has started to take a long time for the air to come out cold.. Anyways, they hook it up to this little rolling machine, and it has two dials, a low and high, they do whatever it is they do, and they tell me the high dial is not moving when they charge my AC and they think the compressor motor may be going bad and recommended me a place to go to have them check it out. So I am wondering whats the going rate on getting AC fixed if the compressor is going bad? Is it just an easy replace one part or some sort of extensive fix? Trying to get some figures on how much this should cost me so I dont get ripped off...

thanks for the help guys

It all depends. If just your compressor is bad, then it's not that bad. Although pumps can be pricey.

I would dis connect the plug after the compressor and jump the two prongs to see if the compressor kicks on.

You could have a leak somewhere, I would get some die. First clean all your hoses and lines off really well so you can see the die. Then put the die in with some freon. This is only if your compressor is good. You'll need a UV light with some UV glasses which are yellow. I have this stuff if your local you can come over I will do it for you.

There's a chance that your compressor is bad and you have leaks, so you would change the compressor then check for leaks.

Usually you wont have compressor bad and leaks because once you get low on freon your compressor should stop kicking on due to low pressure. Although sometimes the clutch on the compressor locks up..

Others might have better methods but I've fixed several AC problems with this logic.

If your compressor turns out being bad, I have an extra that I could send you for $100. That's what it cost me at my local yard. And it's this style...

It is very common on these cars for the compressor to leak. Search and you will find several posts about it.
