Turkey Hunt?
Turkey Hunt? Anybody here hunt turkeys? I am headed out tomorrow afternoon for a 5 day turkey hunt on my buddy's lease in Alice, TX.
I am an experienced hunter, but this is my first turkey hunt. Any tips or pointers? We will be using a box call and a slate call plus 3 decoys.

I hunt them with a rifle during deer season and it is a challege I say that. They are pretty smart animals so make sure you are still as you already know and let them get close enough to you. At our place they run in groups so its pretty easy to pick which ones you want. Goodluck and let us know how it goes.
They have very keen eyesight, so wearing camo is a neccesity. Dont work the caller much....hit it and slowly count to 15 before hitting it again...the turkeys have built in GPS devices so they can hone in on you very quickly. Once they get close many times they will get quiet...they are trying to find you. Dont get too excited and keep your ears open, and just dont over use the callers.
My experiences have also shown that the younger gobblers (jakes) tend to haul *** to beat the older guys to the anticipated mate. You'll know by the beards and more slender build. The old ones take more coercing...lol.

Don't shoot them near where they roost or you will run them off the property for good. To get a shot you'll have to snap your shotty from the down position so make sure that you have it positioned well. They'll freeze for a second and then split so pick your momeny. They have very keen eyesight. They will see you moving. Wear your cammo. I'd reccomend a mouth call if you can work it instead of the box call because you won't have your hands full.
