If it's just a valve spring then you better Thank God or whoever it is that you pray to...and buy some from a sponsor and fix it before you destroy your motor.

No Bro no need for a new motor, do you have stock springs on the car? or after market? Either way you would want to get a spring and container kit. Its been a while since I've purchased one I think they are around $100-200.

I would pull the Valve cover to make sure its a spring, then call a local sponsor to get spring kit and replace them all since you got the cover off.

if you ever plan on putting a cam in id get some dual springs or at least the 918's good for .600 lift. if you never plan to put a cam in id do the ls6 springs since it will be a bump up from stock, just like strini suggested.

IMO, I would just replace all springs with stock replacements, and Save your $$$ for a LS3 or better.

Don't get single 918s if you're plan on running an aftermarket cam! Learn from my experience! lol. If you plan on getting a cam in the future, then might as well get some patriot duals right now. They are $250 for the spring kit.

I would also advise just to slap a new stock replacement spring kit on there. i wouldnt be camming a 166k shortblock but thats just me. Id buy some cheap springs and be good until you get the cash for a new motor. I am in Frisco and can put the springs on for you without pulling heads or anything. Just LMK Private Message me

Go through high water and flood it, lock up the engine. Call insurance, problem solved.

I have 2 sets of ls6 springs. One set are the blue ones off of a 2001 ls6 heads with 30k miles on them $50 or I have a set of yellow ls6 that only have like 3000 miles on them you can buy for $75 and they come with every thing. Or if you don't mind waiting a couple weeks I will sell you my complete ls6 heads from my 01 z06 with 30k miles for about $400 and they will have the blue springs on them.

So is the noise constant, say at startup? If it's a knock you'll hear it even when start up. Mine won't start slappin around until it is warm. When all the bolts expand and so on. Plus these old FLP (old grot style LT's I have) kits leaked a little and I don't have a shifter boot on to cover it up.

Have you thought about piston slap, injector cleaner, or checked your oil? Take a look at the pushrods, could be bent, and that can make some racket. Bouncing off the rev limiter can cause this.

I would say, change the oil and take a look at the drain plug. Only other method would be to do an engine tear down, and I think that would be overkill.

I also have 2 sets of stock springs that you can have if that's what's causing it.
