also, it was illegal for him to sell the vehicle without a title to the vehicle, titled in his name. the only hope for the now "current owner" is to file for a bonded title, which you can do in the state of texas. when a person files for a bonded title, theymust wait for (3) years before the vehicle is legally theirs. during that 3yr window if any pervious owner files claim that they own the vehicle, the courts will order it returned.
once you file of a replacement title, you can retrieve the vehicle. the person who now has the car loses it and he is out whatever the price, parts, time, etc., they have put into it. at that point, you can bet he will seek down the individual who sold him the car.
as for the ticket, sounds like you are hosed there.
Always, and I mean ALWAYS DO A BILL OF SALE!!!

name of seller, sold to name of purchaser, make/model of vehicle, VIN #, date of sale, amount of sale, and anything parts included, as-is no warranty. make and sign 2 copies, and have the buyer sign each. then, each party then keeps a copy for their records.
DO NOT give advance notice to whoever holds the car now.
Call the local PD to have an escort to keep the peace. Anybody here would get rowdy if some guy just walked up and said the car you already paid for isn't yours and will now take the keys and drive it home.
You can work out whatever you want with the current 'owner' once there. Plus cops are pretty much top of the food chain in court, second reason for having an escort present.
