Default Radiant shield, anyone had it installed?

I have had a guy from allied window and siding come to my house and give an estimate for installing radiant shield in my attic.

I am just looking for real world reviews on it before I drop the coin on it. The concept and the product seem to be solid and efficient, and the thought of 25% energy savings sounds F'in awesome.

So does any one have any experience with it?

My house has it and it's amazing how well the house holds temperature.

Highly recommend it.

Did your house have it before you moved in?

If not can you give a little before and after comparison.

One of my nieghbors is an A/C guy and spends tons of time in attics. We have talked about this a few times. His take, if you get the new plywood/OBS sheeting when your roof is replaced that has it already on there...it works great. He said every home he has been in where it was sprayed after, they don't spray it on thick enough to make a difference.

Prime example. Across the street from me, this couple added on to their house. The new section has the plywood with radiant barrier on it. They had the reast of the existing roof sprayed. We were up there and there was a significant temperature difference between the 2 areas and everything else is the same.

I bought a roll of the Radiant barrier and stapled it up in my attic. It does help a good bit.

I personally wouldn't pay for someone to just come spray a light coating of that stuff. It's worthless unless they put a good thick coating and I have yet to run into anyone who had it done right.

I was actually planning on doing this myself in our attic.

Double-Sided, Perforated barrier at 68 bucks a roll

Thanks for the input

Leadfoot- im looking to get the kind that they staple to the roof joists, not the sprayed in kind. I have read bad reviews about the sprayed in kind, just couldn't find to many reviews about the sheeting.

Then I would seriously consider it.

How much was the quote? How much area to cover? Do they quote the price per sq.ft., or something else?

I don't remember off the top, but I want to say after his "discount", it was 1.25/sqFt. Total of 1600 and change, including adding 2 passive roof vents.

My house had it when I moved in...so no before/after comparisons, but I can go all day without running heat/ac without too much fluctuation in interior temp. It's pretty impressive.

Are you saying that it kills cell service?

A radiant barrier should not really interfere with your cell reception/signal, provided you have a decent phone with good reception in that area. That cell signal will still travel thru walls and windows. Now if reception is already shitty in your neighborhood, it could get worse.
