Btw, I did my research on the programs in the area and I suggest you go to College of the Mainland in tx city. They offer and teach you a lot of things that ACC and San Jac don't. Not to mention all the big plants in the area scout from COM when looking for operators because of their reputation.

I'm an operator at Exxon. I love it. Money is good, benefits are good...I make a decent living considering my level of education.

That said, I'd recommend you go into the military for a 4 year hitch. Being as young as you are, you should go out and get some life experience. Go see the world and bang chicks in as many countries as possible. Go have some fun, mature some, serve your country then come back and let uncle Sam pay for your college...then become an operator if you want. You'll gain experiences in the military that will be with you for the rest of your life. You can go in, get out, go to school and become an operator by the age of 24 or so. If you become an operator now, you blink your eyes and be 55.

Just my $.02

I have a question for the oil and gas industry guys. I'll graduate next May with a B.S. Mathematics and Physics minor. What kinds of jobs would be available to me?

The college route is right for some and not others. It really depends on what type of person your are, what kind of drive you've got, and of course what degree you get. The idea of letting a company train you vs college is stupid. They will own you.

Whatever you do make sure it requires skill, be damn good at it, and go for self employment if the opportunity is there.

I did not go to college. I do not regret it at all. I work in IT, and it is a different ball game. Computer Science graduates are useless to most companies. Experience is all that matters. 90% of IT staff is borderline incompetent so you are in good shape if you are in the the 10% and can sell yourself.

The interest and debt can be justified if your future income is high enough. $100k of low interest debt is not going to break you if you can make $150k+/yr for many years after.

I went to college and got my degree and am now in sales for the plumbing/mechanical industry. I have never been in a union but I have several customers that make more than I do that came up through the union and became project managers. Guys with a good track record can choose their schedule and what projects they want to work on. You get training in a trade while working to gain your experience.

It looks like you ate right up some bullshit someone fed you. Like it was suggested earlier, go to college if you're able to. Working your way through is a great way to get experience and have a huge leg up on everyone else after you graduate. That glass ceiling due to not having a degree is getting lower and lower these days.

That degree gets you very far in the oil and gas industry. It helped me move into a position at a pay rate equal to that of people with 5-6 years of experience immediately out of school. I also have found that the non educated people I work with do not have nearly the understanding of the science behind the job and the intricate details of 'why things happen'. There's a pretty clear difference between people that have had a formal education in a related field and people who don't.

If O&G is what you want to do, there's no reason to not stick out 4 years for an Engineering or Geoscience degree.

If you are set on going to work... Look into inspections. You can get on entry level making $14-$15 an hour and you move up quick. Just don't be scared to bust *** and the more certs you can get, the more money you make as well. If they like you, you'll advance. There is GREAT money in inspection out at the plant. I have a couple buddies that started at the bottom and they are on track to be API's in the next year or two which is a six figure income for some fairly easy work.

Just an idea. If I had to do it again and had I not gone back to school, I would have gone the inspection route.

Debt and interest are the enemy. Do anything that avoids going into debt or pay high interest rates. Go to college if you can afford it without students loans. If not, then get a job in the oil/gas industry.

Just keep in mind the unemployment is hovering around 10% and **** is not getting better as it may seem. Thankfully we live in Texas with the energy industry. I'm 23 and I wish I knew how the world worked when I was younger. I'm still learning everyday.

PM me if you wanna chat.
I don't understand the whole unemployment thing, are people just picky or what? I've been offered a ton of jobs in the last few months, all with great pay. One in deconstruction for $15+ an hour, I'll send you the details.

Also had the dually out for sale on the side of the road and had a few offers running hot shots, had one guy literally begging me to run loads with it. So that's another thing to look into. The pay is amazing but you are gone weeks at a time.

***** I'm bankin already off da cocaine.

Seriously though ***** and friends > money, at least in this stage of your life. You are still a kid, don't work your life away because it's not worth it. Go to college, work part time and have fun with your friends. So much stuff I would have missed out on because I would have been offshore or something stupid.
