The .270 and .308 are by far the most prolific deer calibers ever used.
My preference however is the 7mm Rem Mag. Not the ultra, just the standard magnum. I really like the versatility of the 7. With such a wide range of bullet weights, you can go from things as small as whitetail on up to elk and even into some of the medium sized african game.
Not to mention, with a well built rifle and some very well thought out ammunition, the 7mm is a proven accuracy performer out to upwards of 1000 yards.
But what do I know, I'm just some old bow hunter.

I shoot a .300 WSM, great all around gun. I've taken deer all the way out to 600yds with it and it could definitely go further. It's a faster round and carries a lot more ftlbs on out there than a .308. The .308 is an outdated cartridge. Much better options. If you're just going to do whitetail hunting you could do a .270 but I just use my .300 for everything.
Got this one from 370yds in a full run, fast rounds come in handy

How old is your dad and what does he hunt with? There are a tons of rifles that can take down a deer, but the other part is you wanting to impress your dad. Some people are impressed by rarity while other just look at top of the line stuff and name recognition.

For Elk or large game that you won't get close to I would suggest 7MM Rem Mag as others have already suggested, great flat shooting round at longer ranges with excellent knock down power for larger animals. 30-06, 308, 8MM Mauser and 270 would also do quite well.

You wont be disappointed with that choice. My favorite rifle in my gun room is a remington 700 action in 7mm glass bedded into a glasslite comeposite stock. Ive done a few tricks to the action and trigger, but nothing crazy. It has a leupold vxIII 6.5 - 24 X 50. It is flat out surgical to 400, and not too shabby past that either. (past 400 I think the rifle is way better than the shooter lol).
Good optics are key, most stock 700s in 7mm are way more accurate than most people can shoot them. But a good scope goes a long way towards making you better.
If your looking for ammo to try, the only production load my gun likes is hornady custom 139 gr BTSP. Other than that its hand loads or bust for me!

I've already answered but to just bring more light into it. I have a mossberg 4x4. Has the muzzle break for less recoil and a touted barrel to get rid of heat faster. Also a lighten stock so those long walks are not bad.

My deer rifle is just a little ole pea shooter 22-250 Remington 700, but it does work and gets there fast.(roughly around the 4000fps with some loads). But I'm about to do a long range rifle build with either a Remington 700sps tactical in a .308 or a savage long range specific in a .300mag.
But I like my 22-250 for hunting. Has served me well for many years
