Using big words from the thesaurus, when common words will do, doesn't impress me. Nobody speaks like that. It is okay to sprinkle a few big boy words in a written column, but when the entire paragraph is full of them - you are trying too hard. To me, this shows less education. In college, you learn to be concise and to be able to express your point of view clearly to a majority of readers. No big words required.
