Default Problem with starting car!

I am putting my car back together after for sitting about a year. When I parked it I lost the engine key and key fob so I used the door key to open it and as soon as I opened the door the alarm came on, so I undid the battery. Now I put it all together and as soon as I install the battery, the alarm comes back on and my key fob won't turn it off. So I put the key in to start the car and to turn off the battery an the ignition is stuck on luck and won't budge!! What to do? This is most likely a VATS issue? Is their any code I can type in and turn it off?

Will the key turn for the ignition. Sounds like you have the wrong key in the ignition!

You said you lost the key/key fob, but didn't say you found it. *shrug*

Does the fob unlock/lock the doors? If not, the battery in the fob probably died.

And have you tried jiggling the steering wheel a bit? The key/steering wheel lock mechanism may have gotten stuck.

Also, M6 or A4?

The key fob will not turn the alarm off, only the key itself with the ignition turned to the on position. Even if the key fob is working it will not turn off that triggered alarm in this situation. You need to wiggle the wheel and get the key out of lock and turn it to the on position or just unhook your horns for now.

Have you tried wiggling the steering wheel while at the same time turning the key, like mentioned above?

and you're 100000000000000000000000% sure that the ignition key you found is the correct key?

what all did you do to the car while it was down a year? the key not turnin to the on/run position has nothing to do with VAT's. "if" this is the correct key its a mechanical issue.

The lock mechanism could be stuck. This isn't the exact diagram, but this is the lock mechanism: http://img60.imageshack.us/img60/9177/ignition0sx.jpg . You may have to tear down the steering column to get it unstuck. However, you never did answer the most important question:

What work did you do while the car was down? Because, if you disconnected the shifter linkage at any point, you may have misaligned it and not actually have it in park or something.

In other words, there are a number of things that could be preventing it...

I had a heads cam set-up installed, but doubt that could be the issue. Can I just replace the column from another one instead of opening mine up?

This happened to me when the contacts that read the pellet in the key broke inside the lock cylinder, could not turn the key etc...******* sucked! I pulled the lock cylinder and cleared the debris, but of course VATS would not let me start the car as it was not reading the pellet in the key. I bypassed VATS with an inline resistor that matched the resistance of the pellet in my key. Good luck man!

Technically, yes. But, you'd need to make sure that column had a new key to go with it.

As mentioned above, you could have broken the chip in the key, too... Lots of things could have occurred...

Unplug the horn so you can have the battery in without it going crazy. Don't leave it in like that, though since it'll drain the battery.

Did you give the shop that did your heads/cam the key? Was it doing this before they did the work? I'd still recommend just tearing down the column to get at the lock mechanism...
