Long or Short headers

Long or Short headers Whats the difference between long and short headers. Correct me if Im wrong, what I do know is that shorties are more for the low end, but how much does it matter, also Im assuming that the bigger tubes are just for the velocity, like 2.5 compared to 3 for exhaust.
