My cousin Myra (yes shes a girl) went to check out the school and she is moving from Austin to Houston to attend SAM.... She talked to me and has pretty much convinced me to go to this school.... She is going to go for the CNC class????

Just wanted to know what this experience for you guys has been..... She showed me how much it was going to cost...... ITS NOT CHEAP..... but i think it is worth it.... So how difficult is this program.... what do you guys recommend...????

I love it, the students & staff there are awesome. The difficulty depends on your work ethic, if you pay attention and take good notes you shouldnt have a problem. The cost isnt as bad as what I was paying to go to a university (out-of-state) previously, but I think the debt is well worth going to the school.

The CNC class isnt available yet to my knowledge till the new portion of the building is added.

The program is designed to take somebody that knows nothing about everything and turn them into somebody that can work on engines without being an idiot. It's NOT somewhere for somebody to go so they can figure out exactly what parts to use in their street motor. If that's why you're going, your time and money would be better spent on the Internet.

HOWEVER, if you're willing to take advantage of every situation around you at the school, you're going to put yourself in a position to do very well. I talk personally with former SAM students who now work in the industry (These aren't jokers either. These are people who work for Pro-Stock/NASCAR shops, along with places like Kuntz & Company) and they all told me one thing, YOU'LL GET OUT OF THE SCHOOL WHAT YOU PUT IN.

If you show up early and stay late and get involved in every way possible, you'll learn so much more.

The other piece of advice is to try to get a job somewhere in the industry. Find a local machine shop and see if they need anybody to tear down motors. You would be supprised who they'll hire. I've been working at Owens Racing Engines in Pearland for about the last 6 months and it's been awesome. I get to see race-motors go together every day. I started out tearing down motors and cylinder heads, and slowly I started getting to machine and do some of the assembly. Real world experience is in-valuable.

If you've got any specific questions feel free to PM me.

thanks for the fast replies guys...... i think i will finish up this semester of college and get my Associates and then ponder on the idea of going to SAM...

I have no idea, as to what I will do for the rest of my life... and this is a very important decison in my life..... My cousin has planted that small idea into my head..... and i think I might go ahead and attend SAM.....

Can any of you guys point me in the right direction as to where i can get more information about costs, the programs available, tours, etc.....

http://www.samracing.com *also a sponsor on here*

You can call 713-683-3817 , and theyl send you out a information packet. (Which most of it I found is on that site itself. http://www.samracing.com/docs/catalogue/SAM.htm (disregard the pictures, much has changed since they were taken!)

As for Tours, when I had toured the school the first time I had basically called the school and they had said to come down at any time , so I just showed up. (Although 12:30-1:30 is their lunch break)

Come visit the school, talk to the staff as well as the students that are there, and you will get a better feel if thats the right place for you.

Hope this helps.

Im at SAM as well, I love it... I can tell you this, everything that has been said is true. And, you would be suprised at all of the students that has had secondary education before attending SAM. I have a double BBA in maketing and managment from the Stetson School of Business at Mercer University. I am planning on opening up a shop. If you have similar plans (sounds like you do) I would recommend at least finishing your associates. Investers really look at that as well

I was a S.A.M. student from 1999-2001 and owe much of my knowledge to Jud. I was fortunate enough to get to work on the Orange SS. I went straight from SAM to work for Lingenfelter. I have worked for some of the best shops in the US. I owe alot to Jud for teaching me all I know which helped me with the Magazines that I have been in. Without SAM I might not have achieved so much.
