Any suggestions on what's wrong? My car has some eletrical problems, first the battery gauge reads under the half way mark and the car always stuggles to turn on. Second the radiator fans wont cut on and the car gets to the point of the red mark !!! then my ac wont blow cold , but it might be because of low freon. Ok now I have bougth a new alternator , switched the thermostat flushed radiator charged battery, and still all problems are still there what could be wrong??????????? |
do you have the SES light on????? Throwing any codes????? My friend tried disconnecting his speedometer cable that goes to the tranny, and started acting similar to yours..... |
Bad alternator. We replaced mine 3 times before we finally got a good rebuilt 1. |
Short somewhere? Just an idea. |
I dont have the ses light on and actually none of the lights have come on. this is the second new alternator and I even got it checked before I put it on. And I havent disconnnected anything or moved any wirering. but when i hook up fans direct the they work, and so does ac ? havent found the one for the battery? |
also does my car have fuseable links if so where??? |
There are two fuse boxes, one in the driver area and one under the hood. Fuse box diagrams from the owners manual: https://ls1tech.com/forums/showpost....89&postcount=2 :) |
whats the last thing you were messin with on the car......???? Is it tuned..... ever have any electrical problems before....... have long tubes???? They always seem to be the culprit, when wires are burned...... |
You said the car was in the "red", were you talking about the temperature auge? If so, try not to run your car so much. Go buy a coolant flush system and some coolant. Flush out your system following the directions and then fill the system up with water. With the water in there, check for anywhere it could be leaking, this is a problem that causes the temperature gauge to go in the red. Leaks can be from dry rotted cooling hoses, bad WP gaskets, etc. Also, check to see if your thermostat is working correctly. To do this, boil a pot of water on the stove and take the temperature using some kind of thermometer (I used one of those things you stick in the top of a barbecue pit) to make sure it is hot enough for the thermostat to open (160,180, whatever) then drop the thermostat in the water. If the thermostat expands, then it works, if it doesn't expand buy a new one. If your car is overheating, this causes the heater to blow cold, not sure of the reason, but it does this...I think it has something to do with air in the lines. Check your heater and make sure it is blowing hot before you flush the system and put coolant in there. The difficult starting could be a number of things. Mine was doing the same thing and it ended up being that the ignition module and coil were bad. I had aftermarket ignition so it was easier for me to test, I am not sure what you have to do. But it is definitely worth the money for an MSD 6AL and a Blaster Coil, they work wonders on your ignition. Check your battery cables. One of my cables was too close to the accessory belt and the belt rubbed on it and ripped a little hole in it...I had an arc of electricity shooting at my strut tower brace because of this!!! Check all the ignition fuses inside the hood and inside the panel by the driver's side door also. My PCM IGN fuse was blown for some reason or another. I realize I repeated some steps you said you tried. But if your ignition is still messing up, you might need a new opti. I know a few days ago mine wouldn't even start! So I replaced the opti, TPS, IAC (TPS and IAC because I had a high idle problem), MSD 6AL, coil and changed all the fluids, plus the battery cables and I haven't had any trouble since. One more thing that helps alot when determining why your car is overheating is to remove the AIR system. I got rid of mine because it was doing more harm than good. It helps with troubleshooting because essentially all those hoses are junk and don't have a point or function. You can get a writeup for this on CamaroZ28's LT1 Engine Tech forum. |
ok lets see I installed lt's and y pipe and the last thing i messed with was the opti i took it out and cleaned it and i chaned all the wires i have a new ign module and coil and well not new but they have about 2000 miles on it. all fuses are good and nothing looks burned, as for an electrical problem this is the first, the car has been sitting up for about 4 months and everything worked perfect up until the day i started to drive it again. all wires look ok cant see anything burned or ripped and as for opti would that cause any problems besides a slow start and a missfire. |
At the risk of sounding like one of those guys that's just "Throwing stuff out there", you mentioned that the car was sitting for about 4 months... I wonder if you might be experiencing a Rodent-assisted Wiring Mod? Happened to me...Was doing a LS1 swap in my 97 (only took like 2 weeks but) the fucker setup shop in my dash!! |

take it by an interstate battery store. i dont know if they will test it but i know they have a tester because we had one at our shop. it will tell you ir the batt is good if the alt is good and what the starter is doing all in about a min. |
Problems I have to agree with the last few posts, sounds like you have electrical issues probably caused by pestoris minoris. Fuzzy made some good comments about your overheating but the fact that your fans aren't coming on would be the main reason for this. Have you noticed any fuse issues?? Almost sounds like a grounding issue??? Kinda like the forever taillight issues the T/A has !! |
A friend of mine had a similar issue, it turned out that when she was reconnecting the battery, after replacing the stereo system, she blew out a couple of relays. Took an electrical mechanic (boyfriend's cousin) about 5 minutes to fix. I don't know if that is it, but it is just a thought that isn't too expensive to try. Maybe the short blew the thermostat, if it is possible? You might also want to check the fan clutch to see if it went. It is a long shot, but that may not be related. |
