Default Does this look alright

I was changing my plugs today and happened to look at my catch can(sorta) and noticed I had a lot of oil caught in it. This is right at 3k miles since ive last changed it. Does the PCV really suck that bad, or do I have a problem.

I dont think duct tape would survie on the heads. The clear part of that container is about 2.5 to 3 inches tall to give you a refference of how much is in there.

Dude relax, every oil change mine fills up about halfway. Besides, just in case people are being serious the catch can is about the size of a tall double shot glass.

And also, even though it looks filled, the bottom 1/4 inch is mostly baked in sludge from being so close to the motor anyway, makes it look a lot fuller than it really is....

truth

everyone is trying to freak out Donaynay..

in that case, yes your motor is consuming oil by the quart every 500 miles, your rings are gone and bearings are starting to let go... Big cubic inch time sweet thing

I would say if that's 3000 miles worth, it's not a problem especially on an engine with cylinder heads/cam adding to the crankcase pressure. And yes, the PCV system really does suck that bad. When you installed this "catch can" did you leave the original PCV valve in it's place?

The PCV/oiling system on the LS1 has had a problem since day 1. About a year ago I was having an issue with one and talked to the guys over at STEF's (manufacturers of high performance oil/PCV systems) They told me that GM had even contacted them about help on this! The problem is the oil does not flow back down to the pan as quick as it needs to at high RPM therefore, alot of oil is contained on the top of the cylinder heads at this rpm (this explains why alot of people that don't keep an eye on their oil level and go to the track and spin a rod bearing) The shallow design of the LS1 valve cover doesn't help this at all and with 3 ports on them that the pcv suck through, alot of oil is sent straight into the intake. Notice how they tried to change this on the 2001 F-bodies and then tried again on the ZO6. I have pulled intakes off of LS1's with less than 1000 miles on them and the intake runners on the cylinder heads are oil soaked. That catch can that you have is just retaining what I just explained. Thats why I say that's actually not bad for 3000 miles.

Wanna see big problems? When I get home, go for a ride in my car and watch the oil pressure gauge. Anything over 2,500 RPM= 0 oil pressure.

Hopefully it'll su vive the 4 hour trip to Houston tomorrow :o
