Default AC Noise

Well 42,000 miles later, my car finally has its first real problem. It's making some ticking noise when the AC is turned on. Does anyone know a reliable place to get this fixed? I'd like to take it to a reputable place such as MTI, but I have no clue if they bother with such business.

I'm in Houston and I live right by Dairy Ashford and Westheimer.

Thanks

is it ticking inside the car or outside in the engine bay?

If inside, prolly the fan motor. Outide, most likely compressor is about to go boom boom with the bearings.

Outside in the engine bay. I was hoping the belt was hitting something that I couldn't see. Regardless of the problem, does anyone know a reliable place to get this fixed?

Sounds to me like I have to get another compressor *sigh*. Is this something that I could replace myself with a standard 100 or so piece socket set and some other misc tools?

I'll browse the forums to see if there are any detailed instructions.

Thanks

seems that our cars have alot of problems with a/c stuff. if it is outside the car then more than likely i would say the compressor clutch or the compressor bearings. Too bad you cant fix it cause its got refrigerant in it!!!

I'm 99% sure it's AC related and not clutch, cause the sound goes away when I turn off the AC.

So since no one has a recommendation for a shop, should I actually take it to a dealer to do the work, or is this something simple enough for joe blow's auto repair?

The compressor is not very hard to replace, and you could probably do it yourself without too much of a problem. You would have to drain the refrigerant and if the compressor is going out, you would need to clean all of the lines out and replace the orfice tube (filter basically) to get all of the metal shavings out of the system. If it isn't cleaned out well enought, the old shavings could get into your new compressor and kill it fairly quickly. After doing all of this part, you could take it to any AC type shop and just have the system vacuumed and filled. You could save yourself quite a bit in labor charges, it just depends if you feel up to the task.
