Oh my gosh! I am AMAZED at you guys!
Girl, I think you just stuck your head in a dirty pond, because this site is like 95% men/boys/guys! To learn about cars you should go to Barnes and Noble or something and grab a book on performance; then when you are confused about something; ask you BF before he finds out there are about 30 guys on this site getting a full wad!! (Or more!) Most of them are cool, though. But if you ask a question, you will get 50 different opinions on everything, so be prepared!
I have been drag racing for 3 years and it is hard to ever turn back. My car is like my child (if I had one) to me. I know all about the motor and now all I want to do is spend money on it! I want to make history someday as a female drag racer!
Yes guys, I know there are not enough girls that like cars, and that is truly sad!!

Guys gettin a "full wad"? LOL! that is funny I think there is enought free **** on the web not to have to turn to tech for a little sexual arousal. I think I speak for most if not all of the guys that have resonded to her post when I say that we were joking. When any of us made a sexual reference it was only in a playful manner. Hell I never even got a good look at her picture lol! We welcome her and answered most of her questions to the best of our knowledge with out getting to technical. She can learn alot about LS1's and the performance aspect of these cars. I agree that she will have a million different opinions. Reading is a great alternative and a good way to learn about basic principals etc... But Thanks for calling Ls1Tech a "Dirty Pond" FASTTAGURL. Always enjoy everyone's opinon so don't take it as I was mad just pointing out a few things that you maynot have thought about, but in the end most of us are men and usually have strong sexual tendacies even when we are joking.

Well, let me go back to what this thread was all about
You want to learn about cars? Well, it isn't as easy as you think and it is difficult learning from others because some people tell you they know what they are talking about when they don't. Some people just spit out things that they "hear", but trust me... you don't want to be that person! You don't want opinions, you want facts and you want to actually understand what you are saying and not just repeat things. Do some internet searching and find out first how an engine works. It is actually pretty simple but let me break it down in really easy terms. Lets start with a four stroke since that is the basis of what you are wanting. There are four steps: Intake, Compression, Combustion and exhaust. The piston starts at the top and moves down to let the air and gas inside. Then the piston moves back up to compress these. The combust stage begins when the piston reaches the top and the spark plug creates a spark which makes the mixture explode. This will send the piston rushing back down. When the piston hits the bottom, the exhaust opens and releases the gases out.
Now that you have that down, lets concentrate on your cam question. Have you ever looked at a cam? The circles on the cam are called lobes. The lobes control the valve movement. If you look at the inside of a cylinder head, you will see a row of circles. There are two circles per cylinder. These circles are the valves. There are several numbers that create the specs of a cam. The first number being duration, the second being lift and the third being the LSA. Duration (intake and exhaust) is measured by how long the valve is opened and closed. The degree of how the crank turns will determine this number. Lift is measured by how far the valve is lifted off the seat and the LSA (Lobe Seperation Angle) is the measurement between the intake and exhaust lobes. The LSA will determine how much overlap a cam has. Overlap is when both the intake and exhaust valves are open.
I could keep going but it is hard to explain things if I really don't know how much you already know. If you have no idea what any of these parts look like, then my information won't do any good. Search around and study some of the parts of a vehicle first. Quiz yourself... pop your boyfriends hood and see if you can find the radiator, the water pump, the power steering pump, the intake, and so forth. Hell, jump under the car and find the alternator, the starter, the ac compressor, and the steering rack/pinion. Get familiar with every part of a car and that will make learning so much easier! I'm not sure what type of car you drive, but you should consider looking at your car versus your boyfriends car and see if you can point out any differences.
I think it is great that you are wanting to learn....
