hmmm ..... not in any certain order, since i usually have more than one going at a time ..
david mccullough's "mornings on horseback" about teddie roosevelt
bill bryson's "a short history of nearly everything" .... this one was pretty good
stephen ambrose's "undaunted courage" about lewis and clark
leroy garrett's "stone campbell movement"
dan brown's "da vinci code" and "angels and demons"
"five people that you meet in heaven", author ??

this is a good thread. good choices.

I've read 3-4 Dan Brown books and am underwhelmed.

Anyone read Freakonomics?

Dan Brown is not an exceptional writer- he just hit the jackpot on interesting and controversial subject matter.

Read Neil Gaiman. He's wonderful. American Gods, Anansi Boys (the sequel), Good Omens (with Terry Pratchet).... anything he writes is wonderful.

UPDATE

Finished reading A clockwork Orange about 2 weeks ago and have to say it is a great book. Burgess was a genius on how he used the slang in the book. Really brought another level to the story. Anyway after that I read "monster" by Frank Peretti (he is a christian science fiction author) ok book not the best by far though. Now I just bought "Whiteout" by Ken Follett I really like his stuff. Anyway I suggest A clock work orange if you havent read it.

Yep, this is me. I used to read a couple of fiction novels a week to escape. Now I confine my escapes to movies (actually, these are a form of research, too, since I have a hobby in screenwriting that will someday become a career) and computer games and save my reading time mostly for non-fiction. I've added about 30 books to my library over the last few months with topics ranging from The Crusades, the Knights Templar, the Freemasons, a copy of the DaVinci Code (which I haven't even read yet because I'm researching the facts so I can appreciate and seperate the fiction), a book called From Jesus to Christianity (very interesting), and other books on spirituality, advanced screenwriting, advanced mathematics, brain building and memory enhancing techniques, landscaping, and Linux.

Knowledge is power.

I'm not much into reading, but The Old Man and the Sea is one of my favorite books ever. It won Ernest Hemingway the Nobel Peace Prize for Literature in 1954. Most probably wouldn't like it, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.

fiction novels are fun to read but your not really gaining anything from them.

thats just my opinion

I think that if you (not you specifically, but in general) don't feel as if you're gaining anything from the fiction books you're reading, then you're not reading the right ones. For example, Atlas Shrugged and The Fountainhead taught me to look at everything from economics to love in a different light. I just finished reading A Man in Full by Tom Wolfe, a book that I didn't think I'd really enjoy (I read The Bonfire of the Vanities and liked it ok, but didn't think it was great), but I was really surprised by how good it was. Tom Wolfe is as much a social commentator on issues like race relations, class, and gender roles as he is an author. I think reading books by highly intelligent people, even if they're fictitious novels, is like surrounding yourself w/ smart friends: they don't have to be actively teaching you a skill for you to be better off for having spent time w/ them.

very well said......I had a college professor whos class was prett much a blow off but I think I came out smarter because the guy was a genius and him just talking about stuff that had nothing to do about the class made me smarter.
