Default need help from firefighter vol

hey compadres- i'm new too the ls1 tech, my best friend, who drives a 00 ta, has been telling me to join forever and has always tried to get me to join telling me of the great advice everyone gives out about cars and other miscellanous things. well my name is james and i'm 21, my girlfriend and i just moved from dallas to huntstville. My gf and i have been together for about a year now, at first my folks said hell no, just cause she's 29 and already has a kid, but she's pretty cool and we are great together, and i guess you could also say we are having our own baby, i care about her as much as i care about my car, which is a 98 formula, which i'm thinking i'm going to have to sell to fit my new family. She doesn't want me to, she loves that it's my other baby, she supports all my habbits, all of them, where can you find a chick like that.
well the help i need is this i was just volunteer for 1 month, and i loved it, so now i'm wanting to know what it takes to get the paramedic part, i'm going to try and volunteer here in huntsville. so should i take all the classes first or along with, i heard of teeks or teacs or something like that? anyone know.? my new addition will be here before i know it and i just want to do the right thing by my gf and new little bundle of joy, i don't want to be one of those pos dads that run off because it's not the life they chose, believe me its not what i chose,i'm too young, but it takes two........... i'm gong to try everything i can to prove i'm the best person i can be, so if anyone has any advice on how to get my new life started, like should i sell my car, school, i'm at a loss, this is so new to me and very life altering , with advice from some one out of the family it would be great.

soon i'll post pics of my car so everyone can see them, also i'm the only one in the world faced with this, sure feels like it.............i'm so stressed i mean i don' t have much to offer but she still loves me

check with the local community college in the area, most offer EMT courses. I would suggest taking it one step at a time, get your EMT- Basic, then EMT- Intermediate, THEN go for EMT- Paramedic. I'm telling you this from experience; learning the basics is CRITICAL. Besides, most Paramedic courses will require you to have your EMT-Basic before joining. Good luck man, hope it works out.

Have you thought about going through the fire academy as well?

Keep god first and for the most part seems like you got your priorities straight. Good luck and everything should pan out for you.

To get your EMT-paramedic you must first obtain you EMT-basic. I got mine through Blinn college in Bryan. I believe the place you are referring to is TEEX. It is located in College Station next to the airport. And it is the best fire school in the state by far. I believe they have a "fast track" program that only takes like a month to complete if you are in a hurry. If you want more info shoot me a pm and i can help you the best i can.

P.S.- i am a captain in my hometown Volunteer Dept. and am currently obtaining my Fire Science Degree @ Blinn College so i can get on with a paid department.

Brent

Good luck man!

Default Medic school

I'm a career firefighter and paramedic in a DFW suburb so what I speak of comes from experience.

There are several ways you could go about this.....If I was you I'd go throught the Fire Academy and get both your fire cert and EMT-Basic. Both will take about a year to complete. You're within miles of the best fire school known to man. Texas A&M offers the most current education when to comes to fire service. I went through TEEX serveral years back and continue to come down yearly and teach at the municiple school in July. Next GET YOUR PARAMEDIC.....when you start testing for fire depts having this cert will greatly cut the amount of people testing. Depts that require paramedics will usually only have 10-40 people testing whereas depts that only require EMT will hundreds. Also there has been a move latety, where fire depts will take paramedics who are not Firefighters and put them through fire school. It's cheaper to put a guy through fire school than it is to put one through paramedic school. Paramedic school will take 18 months at a minimum.

PM with more questions

I am also a career Firefighter with HFD. If you can get on with Houston they will train you to be a Paramedic. We use the TEEX program and takes a total of about 8 months. Get trained and get payed. Plus you can't beat our four shifts.

thanks for all the advice and help, for some reason i feel like its going to be hard to get on in houston just because it's such a big city, however the deal with college station sounds cool, so we went to cs to find a house to rent, so that i can try and get into this teex, and eventually get my paramedics license, i hear that the hospitals are ok, which my old lady is in the medical field, so maybe things will pan out, with new baby coming soon, and trying to do it alone, who knows. does anyone know when each class starts for teex, is it like college or is it like an academy or something.

I just had a buddy finish TEEX in November, I think it was like 12-14 weeks total. Usually runs kinda like school semesters. Anyways, he really enjoyed it and is in the process of interviewing. Pretty nice people out there though. Best of luck to you.
