if he doesnt wanna pay, small claims court. good luck though, since the rental was in your name theyre gonna put it on you and its gonna be a tough battle.
It is your responsibility since you let him drive your rental truck. In situations like these, it is always best to put all the potential drivers on the rental bill. That said, Who gave the 9 grand estimate? The rental company? Laughable. My guess is that once you tell them that you can't afford that much, they might be willing to negotiate.
You could replace the whole van for 20 grand, I bet.

Seriously, if YOU rented the van, then YOU gave him permission, and YOU are still liable. Was he even listed on the rental agreement as a driver?
as far as coverage from your own policy, deer impacts are considered comprehensive coverage. If you didn't buy the comp coverage, you are screwed.

It is more expensive, but in this day and age, it is much easier to simply pay the rental company for thir insurance rider, that way if somethign happens, you can just walk away, and not worry about it hitting your insurance permiums, or being liable for lost revenue or depreciated value claims.
Several of the larger auto insurers are recommending to their clients that they buy the extended coverage for exactly that reason.
some of thesmaller rental companies have started a policy of actually just charging your card immediately, and burying the permission for them to do that in the waiver language when you waive their offered insurance ..
It is all a big scam .. and just not worth the headache.
of course, none of this is necessary if your credit card provides this coverage ..
