Default grand cherokee??

if anyone could drop some knowledge on me about 4AD vs. AWD that would be cool.

im moving to denver next week and looking to buy a grand cherokee laredo...

i obviously dont want a 4x2.

what would you suggest getting, a 4WD or AWD?

does one wear down faster than the other? what long term effects do they have on the overall durability and mechanical life of the car.

i know during the sumemr 2 wheel drive will mostly be used, but in the winter i would obviously need all wheels.

thanks in advance!

AWD is more expensive to fix/work on, little worse on the gas mileage. 4wds are easy to come by up there vs buying one in the Houston area.

I agree with Ryan, cherokees are truly pieces of ****. I would not waste your money and start looking into other suv's

My gf has the 2wd, 4dr, reg, with every option. It's the road queen. Very quiet, lots of seating room, but nothing like a Tahoe. The trunk area is small, but it'll get you buy. I'm tall, and I can't stand the passenger side, but I'm ok on the the driver's side. There's less head room, all around in it, but then again, I'm used to my ex cab truck.

Who's ride is this for? You, them, all of ya'll?

what year are you looking at? i think the new ones are only avail with AWD on the v8. i had a 93 and loved it. i wish it was a 4wd instead of AWD though. i definatley say avoid AWD because of the increased wear and reduced gas mileage.

with my 93 /w 318ci v8 and AWD, i got 15-16mpg avg, and if i used cruise control @ 75mph on the highway, it would be around 19-21mpg.

In case you were wondering, the difference in AWD and 4WD is 4WD requires you to select when to go into that setting, and AWD is all time.

Okay here is some experience:

I worked at a chevy dealership for a while before my new job and I found that the trailblazers were very expensive and much more expensive to maintain than jeeps. I have had both. Sold the trailblazer at 96k cause it was falling apart. I have also seen many others come in the shop falling apart around 90-100k miles. They are nice for a while and seem to be larger on the inside than a jeep, but they are soccer mom vehicles. They are NOT build for rough terrain (aluminum engine cradle and suspension setup which equals better gas mileage, but less durability). The jeep grand cherokee: I have a 1993 with 179,000 miles on it. It is All time 4 wheel drive "AWD". Original axles, motor, trans, tie rods, ect. The only thing ever replaced was belts, hoses, battery, alternator, brakes, ect. I have run it through some **** and never broken anything major. My aunt sold her 91 cherokee at 226,000 miles. My parents sold there's at 180,000 and bought a 99 w/ 40k miles for 8,500 w/ leather, auto trans, cd stereo, power inverter, sun roof, ect. Try and find a trailblazer w/ 40k miles for under 16 grand. It won't last like a jeep either. Although, as far as the v8 jeep, I don't know. Every jeep in the family was always the 4.0 straight 6. I will never buy a different vehicle. Good luck. craigslist.com is a good place to find them used.

thanks woncamaro.

no matter what i get, the year range im looking at is 04-06, most likely a 6cyl. i really have no need for an 8 up there. i wont be doing any hill climb competitions in it lol. itll be a daily driver thats pretty much always going to be on asphalt.....and snow.

if the 04-06 cherokees a good enough to last 150-ish with just minor repairs along the way i can live with that.

i just learned from someone (unbiased in the matter) that for what i will be doing, an AWD cherokee isnt worse than a 4x4. he said the AWD system on the newer cherokees (ive got my eye on an 06) is such that the power is always sent to the rear wheels like its a 2 wheel drive car, during normal driving conditions. but when it senses the need, it switches automatically to send power up to the front as well. kind of like an automatic 4x4. he said this system doesnt take away from fuel efficiency and generally requires less maintenance than the 4x4 system.

Not really sure. Haven't messed with anything newer than 01, but a smart AWD sounds like the way to go. Good luck shopping. I have an LT1 t/a with about 450 horse worth of mods and I would rather be in the jeep. I know the jeep isn't going to break on me, and I don't mind getting it dirty with fishing and hunting gear. Plus, I will never get stuck unless I am asking for it (I have gone looking for trouble in my jeep before and never gotten stuck although).
