99% of the time you're playing poker you're playing in a straightforward manner. Most people think poker is about luck and bluffing and all of that stuff, but it's really about playing your good hands and trying to extract maximum value against your opponents range. All poker is is putting your opponent on a range of hands and acting accordingly with how that range compares to your hand.
The other 1% is where it gets interesting. This first hand I'm going to submit to CardPlayer's 'Hand-To-Hand Combat' to try to get it published. I picked off a bluff with A high and took down the pot.
With the blinds @ 100/200 I made it 600 from the button with AT. The Small Blind, an, extremely aggressive player smooth called, and so did the the Big Blind. We saw a flop of K Q 2. They both checked and I made a continuation bet of just over 1/2 the pot. The aggressive player in the Small Blind called and the Big Blind folded.
At this point I'm trying to put the Small Blind on a hand. He's a VERY aggressive player and would have certainly re-raised me Pre-Flop with AK, AQ, AA, KK, QQ, KQ, and even 22. It's possible he's got a hand like JT or AJ or AT and wants to peel a turn card to either hit his hand or be able to bluff me out of the pot. It's also possible he's going to fire any turn card to try to win the pot.
The turn comes a 7, putting two diamonds on the board. He thinks for about 30 seconds and checks, and I check behind.
The river is a black 4 and he fires out for 3/4 pot.
I couldn't decide what to think. I don't think he would bet a hand like KT, QT, QJ, or KJ. He would probably check-call looking for me to bluff at it with what I have. He certainly wouldn't value bet a 7 or a 4 there either. So I decide to look him up with my AJ and see if A high was good. I really wanted to get a read on this really aggressive player also because he was on my left and would have position on me for every hand except when I was on the button.
I called his bet and he insta-mucked and said I was good. At the break we got to talking about how terrible our table was and he told me he had T8, for no pair, no draw. He just wanted to see if I would look him up.
Headed to the Rio to sweat Taylor Caby and other CR members.........
