Default BMW 335xi.....

There is a guy working with me for the next couple of weeks that has one of these new BMW 335xi's. For those that don't know this is a twin turbo all wheel drive BMW with 300 horse power and weighs 3800 pounds. Well the first day I met this guy he tells me it will do 0-60 in under 5 seconds and all this stuff. I was thinking to myself he was a little confused, but I wouldn't let him know about it until I get to know him a little better. So last night I ask him again about it and he then proceeded to tell me it is faster than the new corvette. I laughed at him and he told me horsepower doesn't have everything to do with it. It is power to weight ratio. Well, I told him I would drive my camaro to work today to give him a ride and I will be taking a ride in his car as well. I guess he doesn't know his car is heavier than ls1 cars and a whole hell of a lot heavier than a corvette. I will put him on a computer this afternoon at work and enlighten him on his car and corvettes. The ignorance is so frustrating. He also made the statement that not all people want to go fast in a straight line. Once again ignorant. He also thinks M3's cannot be beaten by camaro's and TA's.

He sounds like every other non-car person I've met. Vehicle X costs more than vehicle Y, so vehicle X must be better in every aspect.

- The new 335's do reach 0-60 in under 5 secs. 4.9 secs lol. Also the 1/4m times are horrible = 13.5 sec 1/4m.

- The 335's and E46 M3's (IL-6s not the new V8) will not beat a C6. They will nip out stock* T/As, Camaros Z28s....auto SS's, and C5's. (I think mostly it's a drivers race)

- There is some truth to your coworkers statements. However, I think he is wrong about those 2 BMWs being unbeatable in a straight line. The weight and TQ-less factor hurts the BMWs.

- On a road course BMWs are unbeatable.

The 335s are quick for sure. If someone where to suck at driving, they would probably lose in a 98+ F body.

And M3s are quick as well. There have been quite a few of them that have run high 12s bone stock. There are a few F bodys that have done so too. It's really a drivers race.

They are heavy, but they are great cars. They last a hell of a lot longer, and do virtually everything other than go fast in a straight line, better.

I'd put money on a well driven F body in both cases though.

I just gave him a ride in mine and he said. Dude my car doesn't have near that kind of power. I don't think he wants to give me a ride in his anymore. At least he didn't say anything about it when last night he was like yeah I'll give you a ride and show you how fast it is. Blah Whatever.

Those BMWs are no joke but they arent what most people make them out to be. He most likely has never driven a true HP/TQ making machine. He probably doesnt know, until now, about the capability of a well driven LS1 or C5/6. Everyone looks at these cars as cheap and not being able to stand a chance against German engineering. Even though the Corvettes have ruled them in their own backyard, the Le Mans series for over three years now.

I believe in 2009 BMW is releasing the 1-series with the same twin turbo inline-6 engine. That should be a fun little ride with some pep, dont know how much it is going to weigh, but should come a bit under the 3-series. Either way though, LSX's just make me feel right at home when Im behind the wheel and give me assurance that Im the one doing the *** kicking.

Good looking cars. Pretty simple to get 300 rwhp out of them, here are some dynos from one of our members that bought one and tweaked it a little.

Went to a BMW club track event at Motorsports Ranch a few years ago. Several of us in F-Cars showed up.

We were on track with M3s, M5s and those little Z shoebox things, 911s, 944s, Audis of some sort .... They gridded us last because we were in "drag racing cars".

Several of those Bimmers were lapped by us.

In grid, an M5 owner with his nose in the clouds and a fake European accent said to me ...

"Must be nice to have twice the HP"

To which I responded ...

"Yes, and at half the price."

I'll never forget that as long as I live ...
