If anyone here has a child on adderall Inside please.

Well it is a long story which I will be happy to share but as it says. My ex called me today out of nowhere and informed me they are going to put my daughter on it without the common courstesy of a phone call before hand to ask my opinion. They said they would start with 10Mg and go from there and observe her over the course of a month. This same quack also prescribed it to her other 5 year old if you see where I am coming from. She has five other kids so I see where this is going. In my opinion my daughter is fine, she has her spells but this diagnosis came from a general practioner in our area. I feel as though something as important as this needs deeper investigation and to be prescribed and observed by a specialist in the field. I am involved in the school district but not one she is in and have not had time tonight to talk with our diagnostician to see what the exact steps are. If you have a few minutes please talk with me about this. If you do not want to post here pm me. At this point I am beside myself and not sure what to do. It's times like this i am glad I have stayed single to this point. My daughter is seven
Thanks one upset dad!!!@

My girlfriend takes adderall. Although she is 20 and not 7, she has some major benefits from it. She went from a barely passing student to a straight A student immediately. She takes 40mg. When she doesn't take it, she gets nothing done and sleeps till 3pm. When she is on it, she is extremely focused and gets all her studies and housework done.

Adderall doesn't make a dumb student smarter, it just makes a student apply themself a lot better.

I can tell you though she did go through some testing before she was diagnosed/prescribed to adderall. She went to a therapist that put her on a computer program to answer all these questions and judge her answers to determine whether or not she needed it. She went through this at age 17 so I can't tell you what the difference would be for a seven year old child.

In my opinion everyone has a form of ADD. It's just the ones that are bad enough that should take it.

I wouldn't let a GP put my kid on that stuff. You should definitely get a second opinion, and not from a GP. (No Offense to any GPs here.)

I was on adderall in school .
My attention would wander uncontrollably, and I couldn't
accomplish anything.

I saw a head doc and he put me on it and the difference was night and day.
I was able to pay attention and my grades went up from failing at everything
to passing w/ 95+ averages in everything!

IF it really is the problem, I wouldn't suggest you deny your daughter the opportunity
to learn. It truly is a horrible feeling not being able to control your attention.

Get a second opinion if you feel it to be necessary. It never hurts.

It will make you stupid from what I have seen, sure it might help you a little with focusing but not without side-effects. It is a harmful drug that will develop a dependency for its user, ask anyone who has taken it and they will tell you they regret doing it. Drugs should always be the last option for fixing problems, I was told by every doctor I ever saw to take adderall and my parents always refused and I am thankful to them for that. It is definitely not what a 7yr old needs, some kids are just hyper and should be left at that. Our pharmaceutical companys make up alot of these so-called "disorders" to fill their own pockets, its a messed up world be careful.

I took an Adderall once when I was in Canada racing and had been up all night fixing a melted engine (Melted 6 pistons, 4 sleeves, both heads, and put 4 holes in the oil pan, w00t!), and a broken sprag in the Lenco. The next day I was in the zone. I've never had problems focusing in school or being able to stick to one task for a long period of time. I can play 9 tables of online poker at one time for hours on end and not even realize how much time has gone by.

Not really sure what the point here was but it will definately help her concentrate and focus.

Corny40 09-19-2007 01:19 AM

Guys, the issue here is not about if Adderall works, it's about whether or not a 7 year old girl who's only been seen by a GP should be put on this stuff.

I think capn smokey made some great points. F**kin' pharmacuetical companies. :pissed:

I love my adderall. It is like night day, weither its work, school, or doing things I need to get done; I can focus and enjoy doing work. I do take a few days off every 3 weeks or so. By doing that I know that if for some reason I do get off, my body wont go into pyscho mode. It can be highly addictive, because well, it pretty much is a legal Amphetamine. I have seen that it can also have different affects on differnt people. Some are good and some, well fuck people up. As far as puttin my 7yr old (if i had one) on it, sorry but that seems wayyyy too young.

Grimlock 09-19-2007 07:03 AM

I never imagined that many people here take that stuff let alone people around me that probably take that. It seems that it's common as your household aspirin. Not bashing anybody or anything, just thought that was something like 1 in 1,000,000 case.

CANTEX 09-19-2007 12:52 PM

I dont know why but it gives me this picture of people lining up to take there conforming medication. Hell, maybe in 10 more years they will come in a Flintstones chewable.....

If I was you I would not come across with a NO attitude with your Ex or she will just shut you down. Show consern and ask her if you can take her to a specialist for a second opinion.

I agree. People should think twice about putting their kids on meds. My nephew was put on prozac when he was really young, and then tried to commit suicide. They took him off and tried just counseling and that worked. He is doing great today.

I have been prescribed to Adderral now for nearly 6 years. Personally, it works for me. If it were my seven year old, I would be hesitant to the idea of them taking this medicine. Usually, prior to a child being prescribed to Adderral, thorough psychological testing must be conducted by a psychiatrist. I would recommend these tests for your child, although they can get expensive.

Currently, there are numerous alternative methods to adderral in which I plan to transition to eventually. This includes different types of natural medications and remedies. If you read the warning label, side effects include hearing voices, increased heart rate, insomnia, heart palpitations, decreased appetite, tremors, stomach cramps etc... not to mention this specific drug has been linked to many deaths. I don’t think that I would feel comfortable with my child being exposed to these types of things at such a young age. At an older age, you are able to comprehend whether or not your body is agreeing to the medication properly or not. Kids today are being prescribed to more medications than ever before. Drugs are the answer in some cases, but I think if its not imperative than it should be avoided. Just my two cents. I hope this helps you out a little bit. Good luck.

my girlfriend is on it and i guess she does better in school but it makes her talk uncontrollably, sometimes i just want to shoot myself. i take it when i want to study, it gets you messed up like being drunk except you just want to sit around all day

01WS6/tamu 09-19-2007 02:52 PM

Well everyone thanks for the input. Everyone told my parents to medicate me when I was little for the same problems my daughter is having. But, they were able to control it by monitoring my diet, bedtime, and discipline. However my ex does none of the above and is just a hair above the intelligence of a monkey and will believe what anyone tells her. I am not dead set against it I just want to see her go through the school diagnostician and the correct doctors who specialize in situations as this. When you go to a doctor in our area they are the type who hand you a pill and go on to the next person. That is not what I want to see done with my daughter in this case. However, I may catch hell for this, in Texas the only right a father has is to STFU and pay our child support and whatever visitation we are given is supposed to be a privledge not a right. Thankfully they left the latter up to us but she will hold it over my head every chance she gets as leverage. As soon as she left me she found another sucker. For gods sake she has five other kids at least with the same dad. But when she is with me I do not have the homework problems, disobeying etc. I do fully believe it is a lack of discipline on the part of her mom. But, alas there is nothing I can do for that. So as a result my daughter will get doped. But I am hopping up and down pissed trying to reason with the bitch to take her to a specialist and see about it. Thanks guys.

STFU and pay your child support?? Sounds about like fathers rights in Oregon. What custody do you have? Legal/Physical percentages. If you've got joint legal custody or any legal custody then you have the right to be involved in these decisions. Hire an attorney and do what you believe is right and best for you daughter and fuck what an over priveledged barely smarter than a monkey lazy woman thinks.

My .02

You assume correctly. I think "JADED" might be an applicable term for me.

So, I’m gathering from your post that you have never taken it. Given your lack of experience, I don't see much validity in you saying that you can develop a dependency from taking it. Whether you are right or wrong, lack of first-hand experience disqualifies you from saying what will or won't happen. I'm not trying to start an argument but I don't want the original poster to be misinformed.

I have taken Aderrall for 6+ years and it has been very beneficial to me. As said previously, it does not make someone more intelligent, it simply affords you to channel and control your energy into a given task for an extended period of time. My GPA jumped almost a point and a half when I first started taking it in college. As with most drugs there are positive and negative side effects. The positives include being able to focus and be successful (relatively) at what you put your mind to. From this come feelings of self-satisfaction, a sense of accomplishment and self worth as well as success whether it is school or work. Now to the negatives. These are what I have experienced: It does make you somewhat moody and can put you on somewhat of a rollercoaster of emotions. Usually you will experience a 'high' when you first take it--it's almost euphoric. This is why it is sometimes taken recreationally. It will usually even out thereafter and then trail off as the drug exits your system. This is usually followed by a 'downer' episode where you feel drained, and possibly tired, moody etc. It also can decrease or suppress your appetite. That is a case-by-case basis though. It did not really alter mine at all.

As for a 7 year old, I would definitely get a specialists opinion. Personally I don't feel like someone that young should be placed on any ADD medicine, but I'm hardly qualified to make that decision. I take XR which is a time released version of Aderrall. It evens out the high's and low's and gives you a somewhat consistant effect. Sorry for the novel, I hope some of this was helpful
