Default computer guru's? Rebuilding...

Ok, I'm worthless at this but I'm going to make an attempt. I have an old T2482 E-Machine that the power supply died in. I know I can replace that but I want to upgrade the memory in it also. I've seen the memory stick slots and that I can run upto 4G total between the two slots. I want to run video and photo editing on this computer so I'm not sure what all needs to be upgraded, and if a normal power supply will work of if I need a "beefy" one for the upgrades. What do you guys know and what do you think is the best option for this setup?

well, according to Crucial, your computer can only handle up to 2GB of memory. it may physically fit two 2GB sticks, but you would need a 64-bit processor and 64-bit operating system to take advantage of that much memory. the processor you have is a 32-bit CPU, and the OS is also 32-bit, so putting 4GB in it would be a waste of money.

as for photo/video editing, in most cases, the CPU itself is going to be the limiting factor in how fast the operations complete. on a computer that old (with the AMD Athlon XP CPU), it's simply not cost-effective to upgrade the CPU to a higher speed....the upgrades available for that computer would not gain you much in the way of extra speed, and the prices on the highest-speed Athlon XP CPU's are way too high.

if you're still stuck with the standard 512MB of RAM, it may still be worthwhile to upgrade to 2GB of RAM, but i'd just leave the CPU as-is.

2 GB of RAM will do you good. I would be safe and get 2 1gb sticks..
As for your computer handleing the photo video editing... .It should.. Your bottle neck will be more the motherboard that is in that computer, instead of the CPU..

I currently run on a 2700+ athlon XP.. I have a7n8x-e deluxe MB, 4 gb of ram.
1 terabyte of hard drive space, and ati x850

I have no problems with video editing. It does not do as good as my P4, but my P4 does not game as good as my athlon.. So I have both.. LOL.

And I was saying to go with the 2 1gb sticks, because 1 of my buddies went and bought an emachine (instead of having me build him a computer) and then brought it to me to upgrade for him.

We could not get 2gb sticks to be recognized... I had 3 different kinds of memory at that time, all with different cl ratings.

so better safe then to go buy 2gb sticks and they not work.. I am not saying the wont work, but the brand name of your computer does not use very high end MB's...

but yeah, that is my opinion.... I have been doing computers since I was 16, I am now 31 and work for a major IT dept. so I know a little on this... FYI

As long as its a normal size case any motherboard will work.

Have you been inside the case yet to see what they put in there..
Emachines is notorious for using old crap...
basically they seem to state the computers can handle more then they really can.
As for picking up a MB to fit that, you would probably have to get a micro atx, and might have to do a little modding to get the pegs to fit right.

Take a look at the board and see what chipset you have on there.
If it is Via, or SIS then you would want to get a new board..
If you get in there, get the model number of the board, then we can find the numbers online and see the specs for the motherboard.

If they have something other then those 2, then you might be OK...
SIS and VIA just have bad throughputs for them... Basically they dont handle all the rendering you will do with video editing.

Where you live at BTW???? I have 1gb sticks SAMSUNG, well I only have 1 left..
PC3200, ddr.... I am asking 30 dollars for it... It is brand new, not used.
I have scan tranned it to make sure it was good, and it is...

I also have another AMD athlonXP 2700+ that I might do away with if you are looking for cpu also.

I am in the dallas area.

Good deal..... So if you are needing any help, or looking for those parts. PM me and we can see what, and or how we can get you rocking.

Also you got to remember that even getting the CPU and memory up to par..
You will then have to look at the video card you are using...
That can cause an issue also... Especially if you have a low end card.
it will work sometimes, but you cant do alot of the features you might want to do..
Or it will bog things down..

start from scratch, i used to get E-Machines in all the time with either afried mobo that wont post or a bad PSU. Start all over, go to www.newegg.com and build a computer.
