Default Strange Noises

I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction. I have 2002 Z that has a strange rattling news coming from the under side of my car from about the transmission mount forward. My warranty just ended two months ago and I am looking for a good general mechanic that could help diagnose the problem. I am in the process of moving so I don't have the time nor the space to diagnose the problem myself. If I could I would like to have the mechanic located near the Allen/Plano/McKinney area. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Is it consistant rattling??? Or is it once in a while???

I have the same kind of noise from the front area of the tranny and I have yet to find what it is.... I am not finding anything wrong.. But what is funny is this sound I am having, sounds about like what my 95 chev. pickup use to do.. But nothing ever happened to the truck, so I have since stopped looking for the rattling...
Its an odd rattle also... on mine that is..

sorry no help, since I have not even pinned mine down,

Do you have stock manifolds and catalytic converters? What mileage? My cats went dead on me and the material inside seperated itself from the metal casing and caused it to literally be like a rock in a bucket and made rattling sounds. My performance and all was still there and it through no codes but sounded like hell mainly on deceleration. Solved my problem with long tubes and ory

On the most part it rattles all the time, but it seems to get worse at idle or if I depress the clutch to shift or to coast to a stop. I do still have stock manifolds and cats. It is a low mileage car with under 40k on it. I do know if a catalytic converter recall for this car and am wondering if this is the case for the noise. My biggest worry since it is a M6 car is that the thrust bearing has gone bad. But if the thrust bearing went bad wouldn't it rattle 100% of the time?

Thrust bearing? Do you mean throwout bearing?

Anyhow I doubt that is your issue. I would say it's highly likely that it is a cat failure but its hard to tell. If you can get underneath it and knock on them and hear rattling that is an easy way to identify this. Also be sure your heat/dust shields are all tight as they can cause rattles when lose as well.

I checked all the heat and dust shields that are connected to and surround the path of the exhaust and they seem to be free and clear. I was under the car but I did not wack on the cats to detect a rattling. I will try that. I am thinking that it could be the cats too because the rattling started not to soon after I bottomed out the exhaust on a mountain of a speed bump in a near by parking lot.
Sorry, I actually meant pilot bushing. I have heard of issues of failing pilot busings and rattling caused by them failing, but the more I think about it I would have more issues with depressing of of my clutch and other transmission related problems if that was the case. Thanks for your input conexion2005.

my throw out bearing was going bad in the formula, it would make a rattle noise any time i depressed the clutch but not during regular driving. sounds more like you bent the exhaust and its hitting a heat shield. there is one on the passengers side just where the cabin starts to curve into the engine bay that would always rattle against my headers

Well the interesting thing is my rattling has stopped, but on my 20 mile drive into work my check engine light came on. I am now really suspecting I have some kind of catalytic converter issue. Has any one had similar issues like the previously mentioned ones and if so what did you do to stop the problem? Thanks.
