Default Any Home AC Experts

Our AC decided to stop working today. I decided to do some troubleshooting at midnight when I got home to see what might be the problem. I swapped the breaker for a separate 30 amp. I also replaced the batteries in the thermostat and tried hotwiring the compressor to come on, but no dice. The thermostat will click, but the outside unit will not come on. I also found that the heat will not turn on either. I don't know a lot about AC, but seems the only things the heat and AC have in common are power, thermostat, and the controller. I suspect the controller is bad. I'm hoping somebody on here might be able to give me something else to check. I will probably have to call an AC guy out tomorrow either way since I can't find a place to buy parts.

My condenser went out last month. The condenser is like the speed controll for the outside fan motor. Just a idea? This is how you can test this. Make sure your A/C is trying to come on, go outside to the unit and get a long screw driver to push on the fan blades. If you can give the fan motor a push start and it speeds up its the condenser that is bad.

Are you getting power all the way to the compressor? Check you're low voltage wires for power(thermostat wires at the out side unit) Check the power suply connections at the compressor. Check the contactor as well. I do commercial refrigeration and some residental. What part of town are you in?

Ok. About 45 minutes after I posted this the AC came on and ran fine all night.

SLV_WS6,

I check all of the connections at the outside unit to make sure they were good, butI don't have a volt meter. I am near 290/hwy 6.

PhantomSS,

The unit is 6 yrs old.

I keep thinking this is a problem with the controller b/c neither the heat or AC will kick on.

Sounds like the compressor went out on overload. When the compressor get to hot it will shut off untill it cools down. If it happens again kill the power and put a bag of ice on the compressor. If it continues send me a pm and I can come check it out.

I WILL WORK FOR HOT ROD PARTS!!

I'll do that. Would that explain the heater not being able to come on too?

They do that so stupid people dont try to work on their on unit. Most people who try to work on it screw up more than they did good. Also if you have a new unit and you do not have a liscenced company work on your unit than it will void the warranty.

The condensor is the whole outside unit. You condensing fan motor went out which is totally different. What happens when that goes out your unit will kick off in high head. Basically overheats and shuts itself off.

That would ususally be the problem but since his unit was not turning on during heat (unless he has a heat pump) then a good possibility since it is a newer unit that it might have a float switch on it. Which all depends on how the wired it. Also could be the circuit board not passing power the way it should be. Just an interment problem.

Note to anyone that thinks they should work on there AC unit themselves. DO not try to. You should have it serviced once a year in the spring to try to head off problems. Most companies do have specials for Spring Tune-ups. Make sure they wash out the condensing coil before they try to get pressure reading. If they dont tell them to leave.

Well, I got lucky, and we were all wrong. It died again late last night. The only place I figured would come out on labor day was ARS.

It turns out the switch in the attic had a wire come loose. I paid an $80 service charge, and it is done. I re-attached the wire, but I'm going to pick up a new switch since some plastic fell off of that one.

You got lucky, a.c **** usually costs a ton. You could have pimped Jon out for his gymnastic skills but his dismounts were a little rough.
