Default Need help buying a paint gun

Can someone recommend a reasonably priced paint gun that will work upside down? I believe I will need a pressure pot style but having trouble finding them. I need to apply epoxy primer and top coat to the under-body of a vehicle while it's on jack stands. Any help would be greatly appreciated, this is my first go at painting anything.

i use a devilibise finish line for my primers. there on the cheaper side about 200 for the gun and 3 tips but its a nice gun i have been using it for years its not a one time throw away gun like alot of the $100 are. are you using a pps liner or a metal cup??

if you use a pps liner you can spray any gun upside down you just have to suck all the air out of the bag and then you can spray upside down

I don't have anything yet, just the compressor.

Have you tried the liners you mentioned? I need to look into this, I thought I was going to be stuck using a siphon/pressure gun.

the devilibise gun is a decent gun either finish line or starting line series which comes with a primer and finish gun .i would use the 1.8 tip for spraying primer on whatever gun you buy.Having enough cfm to feed the gun atleast 12cfm@ 28psi and a good filter dryer system is gonna give the best results with hvlp guns in general.

I should have enough air, just picked up a 2-stage 80 gal Ingersoll Rand. Any advice on filter/dryer? I have a small filter regulator on it but doubt it will be good enough for this sort of thing. Also, is it true I should put the filter as far away from the compressor as possible?

Also, is there a reason they sell a primer gun and a finish gun? Since you can change the tip I'm not sure why you would want a second gun.. Apologize if these are stupid questions.

Yes put the filter as far away as you can .put you a tee in the line about half the distance and put a drain valve at the bottom of the t leg to catch excess water. With that compressor you can use about any gun you want ,if you like devilblise products consider there finishline 4th gen gun comes with all the tips you need and sprays clear real good.If your new to painting research as much info on atomazation its the key to layin down good finishes.

You wont need that extreme of a set up to get good results .If your gonna set up a professional shop to make money or If you have unlimited funds then yes.Just run some three quater inch black pipe or copper atleast 25 feet if possible sloping either toward the compressor or the first drain leg in your run witch like i said before is half the distance to filter system.copper is what i use with a similar set up as i described.Do not use pvc or vinyl pipe with this layout cause you wont get the heat removed out of the air before it reaches the filter system.

you really never want to use the same gun as a primer as you do the clear. and most people are in a hurry so they dont have time to clean the gun between coats.

i use the finish line for primers and i have a sata 3000 rp for base and clears.

if i was you i would just buy one nice gune with a 1.8 tip and a 1.3 tip and clean it out between coats and switch tips

and if you have a 2 stage 80 gal tank get a nice filter system it will work for years. ether a descent drier or a micron type. ether you can reuse. i have two micron system in my garage and they work awsome. and if your pump can handle it open the tank bleeder a little on the bottom when you spray too if you have a cheaper drier that works good too. i have done that for a while until i got a nice drier

Is there any benefit to running copper vs black pipe?

Can you recommend good a drier that's not 300 bucks? Is Devilbiss HAR-602 any good?

Yes that is a good filter.add a second filter that has a 1 micron output like the motorgaurd m-30 and that would be a great set up.Copper wont rust ,but its twice as much money. If you go with copper only type k should be used .type L and m are not rated for high pressure .There will be guys who will say you dont need either black or copper use schedule 40 pvc or pex type pipe dont listen and do it right the first time .

All plumbed! I ended up needing to keep the outlet near the compressor so I just ran it up over and back, looks a little stupid on the wall but it should do the job, about 35 feet of pipe all sloping towards a T and a valve to drain it.

Picked up a Finish Line 4 this week as suggested but I ended up going with the conventional siphon feed version. I was doing some work under the car and realized that all the nooks and crannies were going to make things extremely difficult if the cup sits on top of the gun, especially up where the gas tank mounts and the fuel filler neck goes through the frame. These areas all have rust and are being stripped so I wanted to make sure i can blast epoxy over it all. The set I bought comes with the whole DeKup set-up just like gravity feed guns so it should work out pretty well. http://www.devilbiss.com/Products/Sp...1/Default.aspx

Next up is the filter. Planning on the Devilbiss HAR-602 and a M-30 unless you guys think there is a better option for similar money.

Then I just need to decide what epoxy primer I should use, my local store carries dupont products but willing to get whatever's best.
