Red face Dumb n00b welding question

OK, here's the deal - I bought an "entry-level" Lincoln Electric MIG welder, & a large-ish tank of gas (roughly 3.5 - 4' tall?) so that I could learn to weld & be a bit more self-sufficient/able to fab up my own stuff.

HOWEVER, I never got a regulator to go with the bottle, & now I'm looking to correct that oversight. Part of the problem that I have is that I don't recall what type of gas I have in the bottle - although I told the guy at the store that I was trying to learn to MIG weld, so it's probably the "typical" mix (if such a thing exists). I started looking at regulators at McMaster-Carr but quickly realized that I don't know enough to make an intelligent decision.

Anyone here care to help me out by making a suggestion as to which regulator might be appropriate??

Thanks guys.

Get the regulator from Lincoln and save yourself the guess work if possible. As for the "typical mix", it depends on what you told him you were welding. If it was mild steel than most likely the tank is 75/25 CO2 Argon mix or some derivative there of.

Assuming you have the 115 volt Lincoln, this is probably what you are looking for:

Specs from Lincoln as follows:

Shielding Gas Apparatus
Harris® 3000290 Gas Regulator (S25805) and 52 in. (1.3 m) hose (S19303) for use with Ar/CO2 blend gases. For use with CO2 shielding gas, order a Lincoln Electric S19298 CO2 shielding gas bottle adapter.

Good luck. I am self-teaching as well though just flux core at the moment.

Any regulator sold at your local welding supply should be fine. I'm sure the guy sold you a C25 mix. Good luck

Here they label 75/25 mig mix gold haha. The color of the bottle and which manufacturer it is from will usually tell you what you are using. Also there should be a label on the bottle specifying the type of gas in it. (as a safety committee member in my workplace we have to have the tanks labeled, I am aware smaller places may not.)
