Help me decide on a welder I'm getting tired of needed to fab up something little here and there and I'm considering buying a welder. I don't know the differance between mig and tig and all that. I'd like to get something small and cheap. It will mainly be used for small car projects, making little brackets and such. thanks for any input
How much do you want to spend, a cheap wire fed can go for $300.00 while a cheap Mig welder can go for $400.00 which both can weld up to a a 1/4" steel plate on a single pass. While a tig welder usually starts at $1000.00 and is usually used for more delicate work or for aluminum or stainless steel or where the welds are more visable, for apperance reasons.
Small and cheap many times means not enough penetration. When you can buy a Millermatic 175 for only about $75 more than a Millermatic 135, get the bigger one. You can always turn a bigger welder down, but once you max out a small welder, you're screwed.
