Default Air compressor question.

Reason I wanted to get a compressor is for a small project. I want to remove the undercoating and rust underneath my 4th gen and also remove the rust and paint off my suspension parts and would be nice to have a cut wheel attachment. So the small pancake compressor was on sale and used the 20% off coupon and picked up a 1/4 air angle grinder. Well it worked great for 15 seconds then it was out of air so not sure how others used it with a nail gun.

So to use the 1/4 air grinder for my project I want to use it for what size air compressor would I need?

You need a good cfm c(air flow) and large ish capacity. Typically pancakes aren't ment for that. A nail gun by comparison actually doesn't use a lot of air compared to something like a grinder/cutoff wheel or even a impact. Cause they use constant flow when you hold the trigger. I have a 32 gallon for my garage. You could probably get by with something in the teens , but the more the motor cycles to fill, the shorter it's life span.

Check the grinder you bought it should have a minimum cfm requirement. Make sure the next compressor can hit or exceed that, then just get more capacity and you will be set. Just may not be able to go continuously

Okay cool thanks for the heads up and wasn’t aware the nail gun didn’t need the pressure a grinder would. Makes sense now... Thing is I can buy a electric air grinder with a cut off wheel pretty cheap for once awhile small needs. But then I’m still stuck with needing something like the 1/4 necked angle grinder to do the underneath of my camaro. The more I think about it not sure how much I would really use a air compressor. But no idea how else I would clean underneath so I can paint it. Do you?

Pressure is only part of the equation here. You need pressure and flow volume and storage capacity. Most people that want to blast the bottom of their vehicle clean for paint are going to need nearly industrial strength compressed air and abrasive grit. Otherwise, it takes way too long or maybe never gets it done.

It’s pretty spotless and I could for the most part use a wire brush but would take forever and the sound wouldn’t be fun to hear. Guess I will return everything and figure something else out..

It's not the pressure persay just the volume of airflow demands are really different.

For the other issue you could take a high-speed right angle drill and they will bite down on the same attachment the air angle grinder will. You could likely get away doing that in a pinch

I just thought of a similar idea to yours which would be lighter to hold. I have a small dremel and just found out they make a attachment that’s a right angle and looks like it might work..

Using my dremel to make it worth my while though I would need the inlet to be able to handle 1/4 shanks to hold 2” sanding disks. But mine is the normal small outlet size whatever that is. Not having any luck seeing any dremel that will fit that. Or a eyelet adaptor to make the dremel except the larger size.
