Default 240v Welder - Question

I’m in the market to pickup my first welder and to practice before my first project.. a welding cart.

I was looking into 120v welders but figured I could spend a bit more and grab a 240v for the “future”.

Problem is.. I have a detached garage with no 240v hookup. The box is faarrr away.

my question is.. can I use a 50’ 240v cord from the basement to run the welder efficiently?

Depending on the size of the cord and the amp draw of the welder, sure. I have a 50 foot extension cord for my welder and it works great.

Ditto what awesome said. I run a couple different millers off of long drop cords quite often with no problem.

Most companies make dual-voltage welders. There’s no need to pick one over the other.

I use a 240v extension all the time. Only have the one 50A outlet in the garage, and need to roll the welder where it's needed

This is what I run, also if you are looking to get into a decent 240 volt machine, check out the new Hobart Iron Man 240. It’s a bad *** machine for the money. It’s built on the same line as the Miller 252 and has the same internals the low output unit only but is missing the digital readouts. 280 amps full tilt, it laughs at 1/2”. No need to build a cart with the built in running gear and you can run a real bottle.

Got mine from Bakers gas last month at $1,450 no tax free shipping. The prices keep going up on it.

Bite the bullet and buy your favorite brand welder with digital readout. These units typically have a quick set feature and you can dial it in exactly were u want it with repeatability . Digital it the way to go

Sure there is, A dual voltage welder will run at reduced amperage on the lower voltage and have a lower overall amperage rating. With a dedicated 220 welder you'll have more options if you want one with higher output and higher duty cycle. What it really comes down to is how will it be used. If you're not going to be welding heavy steel then a dual voltage or even a good 110 will do.

"The box is faarrr away."
A distance, and the required welder input, would be useful, to calculate the size of the cable.
