Default WooHoo Finally got a Tig

I have been wanting a nice Tig welder for the last year. I finally decided on one that has all the features I need, easy to set-up, and can do anything that I would want

I Bougt a Lincoln Precision TIG 185, I started playing it for the first time last night with SOME luck I am very happy with it so far

Nice.
My boss just went to nevada to buy tools at an auction.
He was allowed to buy before it started, called me and asked if i wanted a lincoln 175 for $500. I said hell yes and he bought it, he also picked up for himself a lincoln mig 250 for $600.
My instructions say 1997, i dont know what year it is. Looks almost new, and works perfect
It's not an advanced squarewave like the 185, but it does aluminum damn good.
Let me know how that thing welds, they are bad ***.
How size bottle do you have for it? I called some places around town about the 185 they told me $1680, with cart, torch, stickholder, gauges and regulator.

Another big Lincoln Electric Fan here. I've been to both their Basic and Advanced Motorsports welding schools, and I have a Square Wave Tig 255 at home :-) (Bought it used through a friend at Lincoln Electric. It used to be Chip Ganassi Racing's welder)

That is a tough question because there is a huge range (roughly between $1,500-$6,000 new for something on the level that you would want). And that huge range, for the most part, just happens in 3 big steps. (~~$1,500, ~~$2700, ~~$5,000). So it really is a good idea to really know what your needs are going into the purchase, since it’s not just the normal thing of spending a few extra bucks to get the item slightly better than what you think you need. Things to keep in mind, Most emergency welding done in the pits at Trans-Am and Nascar Races had been done by a guy sponsored by Lincoln electric working off of just a Tig 175. My welder (older Tig 255) was Chip Ganassi Racing’s old welder… so even the crazy high dollar teams don’t necessarily need larger than the mid-level welders. If you are a full on shop doing tons of chassis work, you may want to buck up to the biggest model… But the Mid-level welder will handle pretty much anything you would want to throw at it. If you are just a garage mechanic doing small projects… the Tig 185 is an incredibly good welder, and you don’t really start getting into it’s shortcomings till you are running either very thick material, or more usually, just welding for long stretches of time. Another option that a lot of people don’t usually look at, but they should are the little invertecs. They are AWESOME and the portability of them is incredible. They can’t all weld aluminum, so you have to make sure you get one that fits your needs, but they are excellent machines to use, and they are tiny.

Not trying to hijack, but where in DFW can someone take a class to learn to use the TIG? I need to be able to make small, strong, pretty welds.

It isn't in DFW, but I can't say enough about the Lincoln Electric Motorsports welding curriculum. It is absolutely worth taking a week off work and going up there for the class. I've already taken both classes, and I'm actually considering going back again to take the advanced class a second time just as a refresher. Some of the best money I've ever spent. This is the same school most of the top race teams send their crews to in order to learn advanced welding techniques. The basic course is ideal for most... Advanced spends a lot more time on the more advanced materials (Stainless, Magnesium, Ti., Inconel, dissimiliar metals etc.)

You can do ANYTHING car related with a syncrowave 250, or a Dynasty 200DX.

I flat out dont like Lincoln. We had a precision TIG 350 here, and it was the LARGEST pile of a welder I have used in a long time. We have an old miller 1975 Dialarc HF, and the repair man was seen the most when the Lincoln was in use. The old miller just kept on chuggin.

You cannot beat a dynasty 200 DX. 2700 for a runner package and all the options. They flat out rule.

Ive said it before, and Ill say it again, harlan has a Miller syncrowave 180 SD, and he has done everything he has ever needed to do with that. Those are bulkier, but run in the 1400-1800 used/new on ebay.

Some things to consider- If you plan on doing a lot of aluminum work, go for something with squarewave technology. The highdollar options in the miller line are for the aluminum settings. Pulse, Balance, Hz, ect.

Other than that, you really need to sit down and plan out what you need to do, and what you might do. you can grow into a welder, you cant grow out of a smaller one with out paying for it
