I have a small portable model from Home Depot/Lowes that I use. It works for a few feet around it, but thats about it. Definitely doesn't heat the garage (currently un-insulated 840 sq ft). Good on those extremely cold days just to have something with warmth to it out there.
I use a "Mr. Heater" brand, single burner propane heater. The propane bottle is the stand. It will knock the chill out of my 1000sq/ft insulated shop. I can run the heater pretty much continously for a full day on a 10lb bottle ...

I have a 40,000 BTU forced kerosense heater I got from the local hardware. A full tank lasts 2 days of running non-stop and it heats up my 20x20 garage good with 3 windows, one main opening door and one normal side door, that's when it's snowing outside and the coldest temp of the year.
During Fall and Spring, it gets too hot in there after running the heater for 10 min from a full cold garage and almost breifly every 30 mins to maintain the heat.
FYI, my 20x20 garage is a seperate garage from the house, it is finished and it has a attic and a concrete floor.
Only 220V (for air compressor) and 110V electrical goes to the garage for the flourscent lights and garage door opener plus some outlets.
