I know that an impact socket doesn't explode when you put it on an impact wrench, but how is the metal different? Can I use an impact socket in place of a standard socket, but not vice versa?

Exactly. Sometimes the impact socket will not work due to its thicker walls, but they can be used on hand applications if one desires. Chrome plated sockets can shatter when used on an impact gun.

u could use both for bolts that arent to tight. 6PT would be best to use on a impact gun. if I could only have one set and planned on using my impact the most, I would get impact ones. if I was planing on using them mostly for wrenching by hand and a little impacting I would get a set of 12 PT and take a chance with the impact from time to time.

You easily break a regular socket on an impact if you use it for a lengthy amount of time. It really depends on who the maker of the socket is. I use matco sockets all the time w/o problems. THe impact sockets are way stronger though. Just hold the two side by side and you'll see why.
