Since you're cleaning out threads and not making new ones, I'd suggest a spiral flute tap. We use them at the shop when we're cleaning out old rusty threads, and they work like a charm with a spritz of WD40.

What would be a good tap to make new ones ? This would be for the crank snout so what length should the tap be ? Better yet, anyone who has chased or re-taped an LS1 crank please chime in. What did you use ? Did you go up a size, can you ?

get a helicoil kit bro, I had a nightmare one time when, an arp bolt snapped in the crank snout, i drilled it out and helicoiled it. that thing is strong, and i've done numerous pulley removals and installs and works better than the way it was before, let me know I think i have the kit still available but w/ only 1 or 2 inserts left.

I would use the straight flute bottom tap, just for the reason that the threads are resecesed in the crank snought. With a bottom tap you will for sure get to the end of the threads vs a tapered tap.

i stripped the threads out on a 454 one time because the crankshaft pulley was way too tight (broke a puller tryin to get it off) i ended up drilling and tapping to 1 size bigger, and drilling out the pulley on a drill press. worked great

just use a normal tap you can buy at the hardware store
