Default Anyone wleded Inconel?

I just bought a $112 tube of inconel to practice on for my turbo headers.. I have heard from some people that you need to weld on inconel in a oxygen-purged booth, and from others, all you need to do is purge the inside of your pipe. Anyone done it or have any tips?

Iconel doesn't have to be welded in an oxygen booth. The make 40,000
gallon pharmaceutical tanks out of it and they aren't welded in a booth.

YOU MAY ALREADY KNOW ALL OF THIS BUT HERE GOES
*If you are looking for 100% weld then yes you need to purge it with ARGON.
*Inconel flows really slow when welding and looks like it has mud in the
puddle. Don't let it through you off that is just the properties of the metal.
*Cap both ends of your pipe off with welding tape and the like and leave a
small hole so the oxygen can escape. Argon is heavier that oxygen so it
will push the oxygen out. Let it purge for a few minutes depending on your
psi and size and length of tube and then weld as you normally would pulling
the tape off in front of your weld a little at a time as you weld.
*You can also buy backing tape and use it instead of purging but it is hard to
get inside of a piec of pipe.(obviously).

GL with your headers.

BTW Why in the h**l did you go with inconel?

Mainly for the strength, plus looks, and to say i did it I guess.. Being as tight as a F-body engine compartment is, I'd like to use the headers themselves to to hold alot of weight, that way I can cut down on the extra weight from hangers and braces..
Just a fun project to waste some money on..

The only addition i have to add to this is make sure you use the correct welding rod. Keep your tungsten sharp and make sure you clean the material with steel wool before you weld this up also make sure to use a degreasing agent like naptha or something that will flash off clean.

Oh BTW I forgot to mention that this stuff is a PITA to grind. It is very hard. So it definitely takes patience to polish it to a nice finish. We use it for cooling and heating the pharmaceutical tanks because of its heat transfer properties. Wouldn't it bring your engine bay temps up quite a bit?
