also, look at what you already have and what kid of work you are going to be doing. if you just plan on doing all your own preventive maintence, you'll need less tools. if you are going to do alot more, but only once, it might not be wise to spend alot of money on tools. then again, i guess you could sell them on ebay. tools are like camshafts, having the most is the coolest, but not necesarily(sp.) the best. definitely start with metric, if you are working on a newer car. if you get say 8mm-20mm sockets, wrenchs( regular and stubby), you can do alot. you'll need a few standards, but not very often. also get some prybars, a rubber mallet, a little propane torch kit, a vise, and a regular hammer.

2. Building a shortblock, 347
really, having both will make life the easiest. if i had to choose, i'd say 1/2" torque wrench. alot of 3/8" torque wrenchs will max out on cylinder heads, etc.

I am just starting my tool collection too cause i got a set of boxes for christmas. I went and got some std gearwrenches and they are nice. They are so much smoother than the craftsman ones. Picked up some Hansen trays for my sockets. I think i may save and buy some snap on ratchets and so on.

You really need both 1/2 and 3/8 torque wrenches. Alot of bolts on the LS1 are 10mm and torque goes down to 18 pounds on some of them. Some of the 1/2" torque wrenches don't go down that far.

Wait for a good sale at Sears, I bought their 750ish tool set a couple of months ago for a bit over 500 out the door. Very nice set indeed. Costco has a very nice stainless tool box for about 650 and its pretty damn big.

Sears always has sales on tools and boxes. Be patient and you will get a good deal. Dont forget second hand tools Garage sales are great places to get a big @ss box of tools for cheap. Your car wont know the difference. Craftsman has that lifetime warranty on tools that makes it easy to run to the store and get a new one if it breaks- which usually happens when you are using them. Snap on is good but you cant run to the corner to get another 10mm socket to finish the job on a Sunday afternoon.

i'm getting this one this weekend... on sale for $100 off /w craftsman club card
http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/produ...seBVCookie=Yes

the BMR adjustable suspension uses the 1-1/8" wrenches. LCA bolts are 18mm... crankshaft pulley is 24mm. flare nut wrenches good for fuel lines.

this weekend is 25% off loose hand tools. i'm going to add on breaker bars, security torx bits, and a set of metric gear wrenches to go with my SAE gear wrenches.

Notepad and Pencil !

So if you ever find your missing a tool at 2 am you can at least remember what that tool was later that morning when you wake up. (not that I have ever driven to sears before and forgot what I needed )
