hey guys
i've been searching ALL over trying to find a affordable, reliable VERTICAL band saw for metal. All the cheap saws have such a high fps that it'd just be horrible for metal
what have you guys found or bought? how do you like it?

you cant find any that I know of for metal for less than $1000, I was looking around for one for allmost a year then I just broke down and bought a 15" craftman floor model one. a lot of times I wish I would have got the 18 inch one now for 1300.

You need to keep your eyes open for machine shops going out of business or people hard up on craigs list or something. To get a good bandsaw you can spend ALOT of money as with any kind of machinery.

Here is one way to convert a wood bandsaw to work on metal. http://www.pro-touring.com/forum/showthread.php?t=25491
I have used the prototype for this and it is great for a home shop.

i just got one of these for my Milwaukee port a band, it converts it into a vertical saw. i havent used it yet but it looks like it's gonna work great, and it looks like it's a pretty high quality piece. cost $75.00 on ebay.

I picked up one of those 14inch wood saws for really cheep.
I remounted the motor and added a jack shaft with an extra pulley. Also changed the size of all pulleys to run the saw speed as slow as possible. I use by-metal blades and I havent had a problem with mild steel up to an inch thick. The biggest problem is very thin sheet steel that is thinner than the space between the blades teeth.
Good luck
Pete

I got a Jet horizontal/vertical bandsaw and it is a very versatile tool. It was around $750. It has a coolant tank and a hydraulic ram for horizontal cutting. The saw then flips up for a vertical saw. It has 4 speeds from ~80-250 FPM. I made a new table for it that makes the vertical saw work much better.
