Default Need help picking a welder.

Well A friend of mine are me are planning on needing a welder this winter, and are kinda at a loss. Probably looking for a 115v unit that could weld exhaust pipe, and probably a cage if need be. Its not gonna be used day in a day out, just some smaller projects here and there. Im thinking we would like one that can use gas or not use gas. Let me know what we should be looking for, and if there is anything you would recomend and why.

Thanks,
Sean

#1. Get one that requires gas.
#2. Get a Miller or Lincoln.

I already knew Miller or Lincoln. Should we get one that needs gas? or one that can go either way? Whats the advantage to welding with gas?

I have a hobart handler 140 110 volt and it works great, shilding gas makes for nice even flowing welds, flux core is junk for the most part, its just basicly stick welding off a spool of wire, its good if your welding outside where the wind would blow the shilding gas away but other than that use gas your not going to be happy with out using it.

I keep hearing gas, and I kinda knew that it was the way to go. Im trying to get him to get this one ( http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/...ctId=100093231 ), but hes not sure if he wants to use gas or not. That one can go either way though out of the box which is nice. Whats everyones thoughts on that welder?

Hobart is miller, just more affordable, and they make some nice stuff also!
What are you looking for? TIG, MIG?

Hobart and Miller are made at the same plant and on the same lines. Go to ebay and type in indiana oxygen supply in the search box. I got my Miller 175 from them and I think they have free shipping also. They have very good prices and anykind of welder or parts that you may need. If you have access to 220v power for a little extra it would be worth getting a 220 welder.

I would get a 220 welder and use gas, I don't think flux core is NHRA legal for cages.

If you're going to be welding outside where there is wind, I'd use flux core.

As long as you don't care what it looks like, or are going to grind it down anyway flux core is great.

Well I think its between either a Hobart Handler 140, a Lincoln SP-135T, or a Lincoln Weld Pak 3200HD. Ive found all of those for around the same price, and they all have the same features more or less. The Hobart and the Lincoln SP-135T are factory refurbished though.

Go with miller or hobart, you get a 5/3/1 warranty. Call them up and ask about it. I dont kno too much about Lincoln.
I have two welders from hobart, and a welder and plasma cutter from miller, they are all amazing, i would never look at a nother machine!

first, get a 220 welder, you might want the extra power, or need it, trust me a cold weld is a weak weld. go with a brand name. also, tig welding is far superior to mig in everyway except speed. and maybe you cant use it outside, i dunno bc i never tried it. if i was gonna buy a mig, you need sheilding gas, period. you can run a flux wire with sheilding gas too and the welds are beautiful. get a spool of bare wire for indoors and flux for outside. or you can get a tig/stick combo and use the stick outside and tig indoors, since they both use similar power sources and can be packaged into one unit thats a good alternative.

Only thing you need to no is the place you get it from will ship it for you free of charge for warranty work. Sounds crazy but a good friend of mine owns a welding store . If you get it from the net or some store they may not want to send it back for you, It will cost you to ship . The shop in Savannah will ship it for free to the service center for free. Custermer service is worth some. I had a new syncrowave and it would not do allum. had one of their guys come to the shop he said had to be in the board put new one in did not fix so he had a new machine dropped shipped for Free i said Free. Said they would keep the old one and make a rental or lonner. That is the way it should be . ( ask tractor supply what they will do and see what they say) Just food for thought
