controlling heaters with computer

does anyone have any knowledge of how i could control my heaters in my outbuilding to a pc? is there any usb device that interfaces with a digital thermometer and can trip the heaters on?

Does it have to be controlled by a PC? They make thermostats with remote-sensor capability, you know.

They have home control software. I'm no expert, but I watch a lot of PBS.
You can control anything. As asked, what's wrong with a digital therm.

Anythings possible but I dont see you doing it without having a good foundation in serial communications programming. *All* you have to do is interface a digital thermostat with a db9 pin. Calibrating it will be the hardest part but of course youll do this through the code.

There are such systems but unless you are doin a full home management system its not worth it. The Building still ends up hardwired to the main control panel....its alot of work.

i'd like to be able to remote desktop to the pc, fire up the heaters, drive home and have it toasty warm. not a must, it works fine now, but that would be neat.

For about 70 bucks you can buy a 10-outlet Web Power Switch. It's essentially a power strip with a web browser built in, lets you turn on/off devices. Maybe use that along with a relay or two, you can control your HVAC stuff online. Look on ebay, search for Web Power Switch.
