stupid question - oiling airtools
Just got a new 3/8" air ratchet and 1/2" impact wrench set, which have already made themselves worth their while btw. I know you're supposed to keep these things oiled for them to last, but is there a special oil you use? Also where do you put the oil and how much how often? Thanks.
There is air tool oil. Read the instruction manuals that came with them. I believe you put the oil in where you connect the air hose. You can also get a mist oiler thing that automatically oils them. It would hook onto you compressor similar to a regulator or filter.
You need to put a couple drops of air tool oil in the air fitting and then run the tool to blow it through. Snap-On, MAC, and Sears (and many autoparts stores) sell air tool oil. I've not seen any good case to use any special brand of the stuff and I think I've used them all (or so it seems).
If you buy an "oiler" that goes inline, you will not be able to paint anything (and sandblasting dosen't work so well with oil either) with that hose (EVER!). The inline mist oilers work well, but there are tradeoffs.
I usually add a few drops when I start working and a couple when I'm done (then reconnect and run the tool for a few seconds). If I'm doing a big project, I'll re-oil in the middle somewhere....Just my thoughts....hope this helps.

I bought a quart of Snap-on air tool oil about 4 years ago and I'm about halfway though it using it every day. It was about $10 if I remember right.
