transjack substitute
i am doing the torque converter
and need to lower the trans
while it still being connected to the motor
can i use a regular carjack?
can i support the trans by its fluid pan?
and while im here asking,
is there anything specific that i should watch out for during this install that is a common problem?
thanks

As far as specifics, just make sure everything is disconnected from the trans before you lower it.
Most important, measure and check the clearence of the TC before you reinstall the tranny. Check it three times and then check it again. You don't want to blow out the pump. These instructions are what I used. Seemed pretty inclusive to me.

Be careful and enjoy the new TC.

oh well
that will change when i do the transgo
thanks guys
No you don't "Need," a trans jack, if you are just on stands. Get at least some 6 ton to 12 ton (height more important tho as load increases generally height will too.) Get the car in the air as high as safely possible! I got a "transmission jack adapter," from harbor frieght for my sears 3 1/2 ton reg jack for 49 bucks. I did'nt have to have it but it made things alot easier. Believe me when you are doing trans work the easier the better. Dude, do you have the transgo yet? Have you read/watched the instructions yet? They suck to say the least. I would not have attempted it if I did not have a full set of Helms manuals. Read and live, and breath that Modern Muscle cars web site stuff on this, it is a very good write up. Gear wrenches! Get a metric set. The trans dipstick going back in is a pain. And for Christ's sake make absolute certain that the converter is all the way in before you put it back up to the motor-Ask poor Magnus about that ****. Oh you have a 98 right? When you go to remove the tq cnvtr bolts have some 3/8 drive metric allens on hand-I think it was 13mm-and pound that allen in so it seats and bites good so you won't strip it. Hardest part about 4l60e transmissions is following directions to a tee. No room for screw ups.

damn dipstick tube.
the bolt that holds it on wasnt that bad.
and its disconnected from the trans
and i have transfluid all on the back of my head as i type this.
i guess it spilled out, made a puddle, and found me lying down.
i dont need to take the dipstick tube out of the engine bay, do i?
i mean, as long as it is disconnected from the trans, its fine, right?
right?

Just leave the tube in the engine bay. No need to take it out.
Good luck.
