For a home hobbyist, sears, husky (home depot), or kobalt (lowes) are decent tools. Granted, not as good as snap-on, MAC or matco, but again, it's the difference between professional vs. hobbyist, and you pay for that difference.

Like everyone else said, acquiring tools is a lifelong thing. As you do different things, the need for different tools arises. Start with a decent size basic tool set, get a metric gear wrench set from 8mm-24mm and a few different ratchets and I think you'll be very happy.

my preference... weekend diy, buy craftsman. if you want to hang on to your tools and only buy them once, buy Snap-On or Matco. I personally own just about all Matco, with exception of snap-on wrenches. and to the ones saying craftsman is tough, do you abuse your tools? i am known to be rough on tools and i have a drawer full of broken craftsman ****. Old sears tools like my father used to buy were good, quality tools... the tools they sell now are no better than china **** imo. (sorry if i pissed in someones cornflakes)

Slawson, I understand what you're saying about the recent craftsman not being able to hold up as well as the matco, snapon, mac, etc., but if you are only using your tools once a week or less, the chances are you could probably get by using the craftsman.

I started with a little craftsman kit, and now have a decent set of Mac.

No comparison between the 2. And I personally like Mac wrenches much more than Snap On, but they're both quality. Just depends on what fits your hand.

I like Craftsman for the really cheap sales they have (over 80% off sometimes) and the fact that when I do break something I just walk in the store and leave with a new one. I must admit though if Snap-On had a store I would more then likely use them instead. I just like the fact I can drive a few minutes down the road if I need something and don't need to find a dealer.

Don't forget also to get a good (L.E.D. type)drop light, and a 4 claw flexible retrieval tool(I don't remember the exact name). Also a large metal work bench, and a large capacity vise to mount to you work bench.
