Default Air pump question?

Why do people take the air pump off? I thought that the air pump is good for the motor as far as it putting vacuum in it...

My buddy took mine off when he was puttin my headers on. Told me wasn't good for anything but adding weight and making noise. lol Sorry I don't have "true" answer but thats just what i've been told about it.

the air pump is an emissions device that injects air into the exhaust making the cats reach their operating temperature faster. its is only on for a short period of time after start-up.

most people take it off to save on weight, get rid off the clutter, no annoying noise at start up, and if you're running no cats, then the entire a.i.r. system is pretty much useless.
