Re: Anyone needing a valve spring tool? I have a question. The stud screws down in the rocker arm bolt hole and bottoms out then the nut us applied to apply the pressure. Any concern with the stud doing damage to the head at the bottom of the bolt hole? Looks like a great tool! Thanks Larry!

If you mean pulling the threads out when wrenching the nut then no to that too. The loads at max rpm full valve lift is greater than required to compress the sping just far enough to remove the keepers.
Re: Anyone needing a valve spring tool? When you start cranking on the nut the stud will also tighten in the hole. I guess my question is will the stud stop trying to tighten itself when the bottom is reached or will it dig down as you tighten the nut down on it. Thanks.
Re: Anyone needing a valve spring tool? I fabbed one of these up in the garage tonight, and tested it out on a motor sitting on the stand. I'll say this, if you'll ever change valve springs on an LS1, PICK ONE UP !!! Larry's price of $25 is more than worth it, trust me. I wish I had an inch/lb torque wrench to measure the torque needed, because when testing with my regular torque wrench I put it at the minimum 15lb/ft. and it never clicked. I used a regular rocker bolt on mine (can you say ghetto?) and that worked fine. Larry's setup is even better, with the stud.

The stud will not "dig down as you tighten". At least it did not for me.

Re: Anyone needing a valve spring tool? humanoid i have used one i made on the dual rev springs this last weekend 9/6. i had a broke spring and i used the tool and it worked fine. the difference in the one i made is that i used a longer metric bolt that i got from home depot instead of a stud. once you get in a groove it does not take long at all to change all the springs especialy with air tools.
Re: Anyone needing a valve spring tool? Using a bolt can be a dangerous situation. If you start applying load before you have enough thread engagement the threads could strip in the head. I haven't seen many bolts with enough threads to have enough thread to engage and then travel far enough to install the keepers. Particularly when installing a tall free length spring. Remember you are screwing into aluminum.
Re: Anyone needing a valve spring tool? It will work with a longer bolt, I did it. I made one of these tools for my cam/spring swap and bought a bolt about 3 inches long, and also bought a nut/washer for it. You just turn the nut all the way to the top of the bolt head with the washer under the nut, then tighten the bolt in the rocker hole, and tighten the nut down to compress the spring. That way if you're worried about turning the bolt while you turn the nut, you can just use a ratchet/wrench to hold the bolt head while you turn the nut. It's a little more work, but I couldn't find any studs in the amount of time I had. Tool worked great, finished all 16 springs in about 4 1/2 hours.

Re: Anyone needing a valve spring tool? I made one of these and used it on a full set of crane doubles. Works GREAT! Couldn't be any easier. I made my stud out of 8mm threaded rod (pretty soft stuff) and the stud made it through all 16 springs although I'll need to cut a new one for next time. Whatever Larry is supplying is probably much better.
