It sounds like you figured out what to do. Any dry, uncoated metal surfaces moving against each other will gall. Be sure to use plenty of lubrication on the stud as well as the washers. It is best to use 2 washers. Grease seems to stay in place better than oil.

I borrowed my buddy's larry tool, but he couldnt find the stud and nut. What size stud is it, m8 1.25 ? Also, how long should it be, 2 or 3 inches?

id like to see pics of this crane tool, ive used the one that a member on this board makes for the in car, worked great but i had to use a mirror on a telescoping handle to see on the back cylinders if the new spring was centered so when i compressed it, it didnt go right on top of the valve. and if this one can do 2 at once, i either see it being a total pain to line up, or a godsend. id have to try it to determine.

This tool works with LT1s if you drill the bolt hole out to the correct size. The rocker stud is larger on LT1.

Hey Larry,
The tool worked perfectly as expected on my spring swap. I could not imagine doing the swap without it.

Thanks

Sorry but I don't. This tool was designed for the LS1 only. It will work with LT1 if you make the hold bigger. Don't know about the other Chevy motors.
